PA SEN. GREG ROTHMAN INTRODUCES RIGHT TO HUNT, FISH, AND TRAP TO STATE CONSTITUTION

Pennsylvania Sen. Greg Rothman is pushing a constitutional amendment that would establish the right to hunt, fish and trap in the Pennsylvania Constitution. The proposal would recognize those activities as protected rights while still allowing the state to regulate seasons, licenses and wildlife management.

Interestingly, Pennsylvania has been here before. The state’s original 1776 Constitution included protections for hunting and fishing, but those protections disappeared when Pennsylvania adopted a new constitution in 1790. Now, more than 200 years later, Rothman is working to put those rights back into the state constitution.

I spoke with Dan Sneath, Pennsylvania’s director for Hunter Nation, and he told me Hunter Nation is working directly with Rothman to help get the amendment passed. If it makes it through the required legislative process, Pennsylvania voters would ultimately have the final say at the ballot box.

Currently, 24 state constitutions protect the right to hunt and 26 protect the right to fish. I've introduced legislation to ensure the rights of hunting, fishing and trapping are never undermined here in the commonwealth, by including them in the Pennsylvania Constitution.

Hunting, fishing and trapping are an important part of our heritage and way of life. They contribute to wildlife management and habitat conservation. We must ensure these rights are protected in perpetuity.
