Some people have a badge. Chase Boddicker has a nose.
Chase is an environmental health inspector with Mesa County Public Health in Colorado, and part of his job is investigating odor complaints. When someone calls to report that something really stinks, he shows up with a Nasal Ranger, a tool that measures odor in the field.
"I like to joke that my nose is certified by the great state of Colorado," he told us. His eyes are certified too, for reading opacity. His team hasn't given him the Park Ranger hat yet, but he's hoping.
Chase joined us at the CEHA and WAFDO Mega Conference in Lakewood for a great conversation about inspections, curiosity, and why being "serious when I need to be serious, otherwise light and airy" is a pretty good approach to the job.

Ever wonder what a health inspector actually runs into on the job?
On the latest episode of Beyond Data Management, Chase Boddicker of Mesa County Public Health in Colorado shared a few of his favorites.
Exhibit A: cat food in a restaurant kitchen. The explanation, straight from the operator: "It's to feed the cats. They'll take care of our rodent problem." Chase couldn't argue with the logic, so he offered a pest control referral instead. They took it.
Exhibit B: someone selling freeze-dried meat at a market. Chase asked what happens when you add water. The answer: it turns back into raw meat. It had never been cooked. "I don't know what kind of Dexter's Laboratory science you figured out there," he said. He loved the ingenuity and pulled it from sale anyway.
Recorded live at the CEHA and WAFDO Mega Conference in Lakewood, Colorado.

Massachusetts is running out of places to put its wastewater sludge.
Wastewater and septic programs generate some of the heaviest paperwork in Environmental Health — permits, site evaluations, inspections, enforcement, often tracked in separate systems or spreadsheets instead of one place.
That, much like sludge, adds up fast, especially for smaller departments.
HS CloudSuite helps EH agencies nationwide run wastewater programs more efficiently: online permit applications, mobile inspections that sync automatically, and every permit, inspection, and enforcement action in one record instead of scattered files.
We'll be at the Yankee Conference if you want to see what that looks like for your agency. Learn More: https://hubs.li/Q04x8j2Y0

The cook took his dentures out, set them in a bowl with the lunch dishes, and kept right on talking to the health inspector — completely toothless.
A complaint had come in about a restaurant Joseph Addison had inspected for years, always with clean reports. When he showed up to check it out, the story turned out to be exactly what it sounded like: the cook found his dentures uncomfortable, so he'd pop them out to eat lunch, drop them in a bowl, then set that bowl right next to the dishes about to go back into service.
Addison's take on stories like this one, from the latest episode of Beyond Data Management: inspectors aren't out to catch people. They're just there to see people's kitchens — and, apparently, sometimes their teeth.
