10 principles I learned starting in the Big Ten that nobody teaches:
1. Position beats technique.
Most grapplers don’t need more moves. They need better positions.
2. Control creates opportunities.
The goal isn’t to force finishes. It’s to make them inevitable.
3. Pressure wins matches.
Pressure breaks posture, creates reactions, and forces mistakes.
4. Create reactions, don’t chase moves.
The best attacks happen because your opponent has no good options left.
5. Master a few things deeply.
One great shot is worth more than 100 average techniques.
6. Understanding beats memorization.
The best grapplers understand leverage, pressure, and body position.
7. Defense should lead to offense.
Your biggest breakthroughs happen when bad positions become scoring opportunities.
8. Chain wrestling is mandatory.
The first attack rarely works. The transition is often what scores.
9. The Power Position is the destination.
Break them down. Stay in front. Everything gets easier.
10. Confidence comes from competence.
The most confident grapplers aren’t fearless. They’re prepared.
Most grapplers spend their careers collecting moves.
The best grapplers spend their careers mastering principles.

Super simple detail that nobody teaches… 👇
And it’s THE KEY to finishing your shots.
Singles. Doubles. Even when you’re already on the mat.
The key?
ISOLATE THE ANKLE.
The higher you are on the leg, the stronger your opponent is.
But once you isolate the ankle, you take away their power.
They can’t effectively sprawl.
They can’t generate the same power through their hips.
And they can’t square back up.
Control the ankle → control the position → finish the takedown.
Next time you get in on a shot, don’t just think about grabbing the leg.
Get to the ankle.

If you’re going to shoot in BJJ…
These are the simplest and least likely to put you harms way takedowns.
Most grapplers defend shots wrong.
They panic.
They sprawl away.
They accept bad positions.
They stay stuck reacting instead of controlling and dictating the match
Here are 5 ways Big Ten wrestlers defend shots that almost nobody teaches.

If you’ve never put your body through this, then you don’t know what true physical exhaustion feels like.
And unfortunately, you may never truly discover what your mind is capable of overcoming.
Because when your body is begging you to stop… that’s when you find out just how strong your mind really is.
