"When Wes Studi asked, 'How can they own our land?' in Hell on Wheels, it wasn't just a line from a TV series. It reflected a question that has echoed throughout American history. As the United States marks its 250th anniversary, that question still resonates. The General Allotment Act (Dawes Act) divided tribal lands into private parcels, stripping Indigenous nations of millions of acres through policies presented as "legal" progress. Native Americans have been recognized as U.S. citizens since 1924. Yet recent ICE operations have raised concerns among Indigenous communities. Reports describe Native citizens being questioned or asked to prove their identity on lands their ancestors lived on long before the United States existed. A Mescalero Apache tribal member was reportedly asked for a passport during an ICE operation. Earlier this year, the Oglala Sioux Tribe voted to ban ICE from its reservation after concerns about enforcement affecting Native people. Do people realize that the first peoples of this land were among the last to receive U.S. citizenship? This is why the quote from Hell on Wheels still feels relevant: "How can they own our land?"
