In 1976, country singer and songwriter Dolly Parton performed the traditional Appalachian folk song “In The Pines” alongside members of her family on the television series Dolly!, often referred to as Monday Night Variety. The performance featured several of Dolly’s siblings and relatives, reflecting the musical traditions she grew up with in the Smoky Mountains of eastern Tennessee, where singing in churches and family gatherings was a major part of daily life. “In The Pines,” sometimes known as “Where Did You Sleep Last Night,” is a centuries-old folk ballad that has been passed through generations across the American South and Appalachia. Long before artists like Nirvana and Lead Belly popularized their own versions of the song, it existed as part of the oral folk tradition Dolly Parton was raised around. Her 1976 performance stood out for its stripped-down, family-centered style, with close harmonies and acoustic instrumentation that reflected the song’s Appalachian roots rather than the polished country-pop sound dominating television at the time. The footage has since become widely shared online for capturing a rare look at Dolly performing traditional mountain music with the family members who helped shape her early musical life. #history #dollyparton #music #guitar #folksong

Ms Rachel is exactly right.

We can tolerate backlash, but what we can’t tolerate is children — or anyone — being bombed.

We know our history, both as anti-Zionist Jews and as organizers working towards Palestinian liberation. Time and time again, we’ve seen solidarity activists face consequences for speaking up and taking action. And yet, we know that the risks for those who stand in solidarity pales in comparison to the risks faced by oppressed people fighting for their freedom. Our opposition thrives by cultivating a climate of intimidation, but we know that solidarity is stronger than fear.

Inevitably, oppressed people everywhere will seek — and gain — their freedom. We choose to stand with them, because no one is free until everyone is free. In other words, solidarity is the only path forward. We remain steadfast in our dedication towards justice and safety for all, because it’s collective liberation or nothing.
