A few thoughts on the new iPhone 18 Pro from an iPhone filmmaking perspective.

Apple finally added manual controls to the native Camera app, including shutter speed, white balance, aperture and a histogram. Being able to lock the white balance and use a slower shutter for motion blur without opening another camera app is a big deal.

But the biggest update for me is definitely the variable aperture. The main camera can open to ƒ/1.48 for better low-light shots or close down to ƒ/4 for more depth of field and better control in bright conditions. This is something we’ve never had on an iPhone before, and I’m really curious to see how much of a difference it makes in real-world filming.

We also got a new 48MP main camera, the A20 Pro chip and much better battery life. The v***r chamber now has three times more surface area, which should help with heat dissipation and keep the phone performing better during longer shoots.

Overall, these are meaningful upgrades for filmmakers—not just another small camera update. More control, better low-light performance, better cooling and longer battery life.

And then there’s the iPhone Duo. I didn’t know I wanted one before the keynote. I definitely don’t need it…but now I want it. 😂
