SHALVA
SHALVA is the oldest independent, Jewish domestic abuse agency in the United States. Our clients receive free and individualized services for as long as needed.
SHALVA offers confidential domestic abuse counseling services to the metropolitan Chicago Jewish community in a culturally-sensitive and caring environment.
Tonight begins the first night of Sukkot, a festival of gathering. 🌿
The holiday celebrates the gathering of the harvest, and the protection that was provided for the Jewish people for 40 years after their exodus from slavery in Egypt.
During the holiday, gathering in the Sukkah is a mitzvah (good deed), and also implies a sense of closeness and security.
It’s also a mitzvah to protect yourself and your soul. So if something doesn’t feel right in your interpersonal relationship, please reach out. Everyone deserves to feel safe at home.
Our help line is free, confidential, and available 24/7.

This Monday marks Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement. It is considered the holiest day of the year, and is largely observed through fasting.
It is also a time when we speak about forgiveness. We seek to make right the wrongs we have committed.
At SHALVA, we recognize that forgiveness can be a difficult topic for survivors.
Apologies never received, “I’m sorry”s that could never undo the damage, the inability to forgive themselves when self-blame creeps in.
We see you, and we continue to support you in your healing journey.
Wishing all who observe it a peaceful and meaningful Yom Kippur.

While we are celebrating the Jewish New Year, we are also called to think about accountability.
SHALVA’s Executive Director Marlene Copeland says, “At SHALVA, we know that when it comes to domestic abuse, responsibility belongs solely to the person causing harm.
Survivors should never be blamed or judged for the decisions they make while navigating situations that are often complicated, painful, and dangerous.
Instead, we are challenged to ask ourselves: What more can we do to create communities where abuse is not tolerated and where survivors find support, safety, and respect?”
L’Shana Tovah Umetukah – wishing you a sweet new year! From all of us at SHALVA.

The Hebrew month of Tishrei begins Friday night at sundown. This Shabbat also brings Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.
Rosh Hashanah ushers in a 10 day period of reflection called the Days of Awe.
We come together as Jewish people to focus on forgiveness, and to set our intentions for the coming year.
In 5787, SHALVA is committed to providing ongoing support and healing to survivors of intimate partner abuse.

If you’re tempted to ask AI for legal advice or use it to prepare legal documentation… we strongly advise that you reconsider.
Artificial intelligence may seem helpful. But if you are using it in place of an actual lawyer, you could actually be making things more difficult for yourself.
Our latest blog post covers what survivors (and everyone else!) need to know about AI’s privacy limitations and how using AI could compromise your client-attorney privilege.

When Tracy Zirin first heard about SHALVA, she said, “I was surprised at the number of clients who lived right in my community and all over the North Shore.”
Domestic abuse doesn’t discriminate. Anyone can be impacted by domestic abuse regardless of gender identity, race, ethnicity, age, sexual orientation, religion, education, or socioeconomic background.
Years ago, she attended a SHALVA event and was moved by the survivor stories. She chose to make a difference by becoming a recurring supporter of our luncheon.
We’re grateful for Tracy and all of our donors who help us provide life-changing support to survivors of abuse.
