When I say Doolittle
You say Rockets!!!!

In the beginning of the year I declared that this was the year of growth. I spoke love, power, resilience, peace, and sheer grit into my children everyday. I reminded them that words have power, and I simply lost my mind if anyone uttered anything less than excellence in my presence. This year I challenged my staff to have fun and to enjoy teaching. I challenged myself to work like lives depended on each and every move that I made. I did not tell people that it was time for change, I declared that it was already done. This year I was determined to celebrate the growth that I saw before this school year started. So please enjoy this very special moment with me and watch our very short TikTok of our Growth Awards Assembly where every child was celebrated because every child in my building grew in some capacity!

The Chicago Public Education Fund is proud to spotlight Iysha Jones, principal at James R. Doolittle Academy and a member of our 2025–26 Malott Educator Fellowship cohort.

At Doolittle, recent improvements point to meaningful gains in student engagement and attendance. Chronic absenteeism has decreased from 47% in 2025 to 37% in 2026, while chronic truancy has dropped from 61% to 48% over the same time—reflecting progress in getting more students to school consistently. The school has also seen increased parent engagement and a stronger overall student experience.

One example of this work is the expansion of elective offerings. Students in grades 2–8 now have access to more than 13 electives, creating more opportunities to explore their interests and feel connected to their learning. 05/06/2026
