Japanese scientists have achieved a major breakthrough by using CRISPR gene-editing technology to remove the extra copy of chromosome 21, the genetic cause of Down syndrome, from human cells grown in the laboratory. The edited cells showed more normal gene activity and improved cellular function, raising hopes that future treatments could target the root cause of the condition instead of only managing its symptoms.
While this discovery is a significant step forward, it is not yet a cure. The research has only been demonstrated in lab-grown human cells, and much more testing is needed before it can be considered safe and effective for patients. Scientists say the findings could pave the way for future therapies, but clinical use remains years away.

A Filipino engineering student, Carvey Ehren Maigue, developed AuREUS, an innovative solar technology that transforms recycled fruit and vegetable waste into a material capable of capturing ultraviolet (UV) light and converting it into electricity. Unlike conventional solar panels that rely mainly on direct sunlight, AuREUS can harness UV rays that pass through clouds, allowing it to generate power even on overcast days. The technology also gives damaged crops and food waste a second life, supporting both clean energy and sustainability.
AuREUS earned global recognition after winning the James Dyson Sustainability Award in 2020. While the technology is still in the prototype and development stage rather than being commercially deployed, it has attracted worldwide attention for its potential to improve renewable energy and reduce agricultural waste.

China is home to one of the world's most remarkable solar energy projects a massive horse-shaped solar farm stretching across the desert in Inner Mongolia. Spanning nearly 250 miles (about 400 kilometers), the installation combines thousands of solar panels arranged to create the outline of a galloping horse while generating large amounts of clean electricity. The project symbolizes China's continued investment in renewable energy and its push to reduce carbon emissions.
Beyond its striking design, the solar installation contributes to powering homes and industries with renewable energy while making productive use of vast desert landscapes. It also reflects the country's broader strategy of expanding large-scale solar infrastructure to meet growing energy demands and climate goals.

China has regained the spotlight in solar innovation with the development of a record-breaking perovskite solar panel, achieving one of the highest reported power conversion efficiencies for this next-generation technology. Perovskite solar cells are lighter, more flexible, and potentially less expensive to manufacture than traditional silicon panels, making them a promising solution for the future of renewable energy. Researchers believe the breakthrough could help improve solar performance while lowering production costs.
The achievement highlights China's continued investment in clean energy research and advanced solar technologies. Although perovskite panels are still being refined for long-term durability before widespread commercial use, the latest efficiency milestone marks a significant step toward more efficient and affordable renewable energy systems.

Sweden’s Markbygden Wind Farm has become one of the largest onshore wind energy projects ever developed. Located near Piteå in northern Sweden, the massive project is designed to include up to 1,101 wind turbines spread across roughly 450 square kilometers. Once fully completed, it is expected to reach a total installed capacity of around 4 gigawatts (GW), generating enough clean electricity to power millions of homes while reducing carbon emissions on a large scale.
The project highlights the growing role of renewable energy in meeting global electricity demand. Markbygden is expected to produce up to 12 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity annually, making it one of the most ambitious wind power developments in the world. Its scale demonstrates how large-scale wind energy can contribute significantly to the transition toward cleaner and more sustainable power systems.

Floating solar panels are proving that renewable energy can thrive even in some of the harshest weather conditions. In Canada, innovative floating photovoltaic (FPV) systems have successfully continued generating electricity throughout freezing winters by using specialized floating platforms and ice-prevention technology. Unlike common assumptions, solar panels often perform more efficiently in cold temperatures, allowing these systems to remain productive despite snow and sub-zero conditions.
Researchers found that a foam-backed floating solar system installed in Ontario stayed operational throughout winter while maintaining ice-free water around the panels with minimal additional energy use. The breakthrough demonstrates how floating solar technology can expand clean energy production in cold-climate regions while also conserving valuable land resources. As renewable energy adoption grows, these winter-ready solar systems could play an important role in the future of sustainable power generation.

A viral claim circulating online says that China has unveiled “Hanyuan-2,” described as the world’s first dual-core quantum computer. However, there is currently no verified scientific announcement, peer-reviewed publication, or official confirmation from major institutions supporting the existence of such a system. Neither reputable quantum computing reports nor established tech research bodies have documented a machine by this name or capability.
As of now, leading quantum developments are being reported by organizations such as IBM, Google, and China’s own research institutions like the Chinese Academy of Sciences, but nothing matches the “Hanyuan-2 dual-core quantum computer” claim. This suggests the story is likely exaggerated or false, highlighting how quickly unverified tech news can spread online.

A rare medical case in Algeria left doctors stunned when a 73-year-old woman was found to be carrying a calcified fetus, commonly known as a “stone baby,” for more than 35 years. The condition, medically called lithopedion, occurs when a fetus from an abdominal pregnancy dies and becomes calcified by the body instead of being absorbed or expelled. The discovery was made after the woman sought treatment for abdominal pain, revealing one of the world's rarest pregnancy-related conditions.
Experts say lithopedion is extremely uncommon, with only a small number of documented cases worldwide. In this case, the fetus had remained inside the woman’s body for decades without her knowledge, highlighting the remarkable ways the human body can adapt to rare medical circumstances. The case has fascinated both doctors and the public due to its rarity and medical significance.

Sweet potatoes praised as nutrient-rich “superfood” packed with vitamins and fiber
sweet potato are often described by nutrition experts as one of the most nutrient-dense foods available, thanks to their high levels of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants in a relatively low-calorie package.
A single baked sweet potato can provide over 100% of daily vitamin A needs, along with vitamin C, vitamin B6, potassium, and dietary fiber. These nutrients support vision, immune health, heart function, and digestion.
They also have a lower glycemic index when prepared in certain ways, making them a popular complex carbohydrate choice for balanced diets.
