What happens when you show up, prepare, sacrifice, play with integrity, and still lose?

We are taught to believe that goodness, effort, and preparation should guarantee victory.

But soccer tells a more honest story.

Sometimes the better team loses.

Sometimes one unexpected bounce changes the entire match.

Sometimes the scoreboard records an outcome that does not reflect the courage, beauty, growth, or humanity displayed on the field.

In Sermon 50: What the Scoreboard Can’t Measure, we use the beautiful game as a metaphor for life.

We explore the expectations we carry onto the pitch, the danger of comparing people who were never meant to play the same position, and the difference between an unwanted outcome and a failed life.

Through 'Bend It Like Beckham', 'Ted Lasso, 'Welcome to Wrexham, sacred wisdom, and moving World Cup moments involving Lionel Messi, Vozinha, Erling Haaland, and Harry Kane, we ask a deeper question:

Not only, “Did I win?”

But, “Who did I become because I played?”

The scoreboard can measure goals.

It cannot measure integrity.

It cannot measure courage.

It cannot measure compassion.

It cannot measure the person who walks off the field.

The scoreboard tells history.
The soul tells the truth.

NEW SPECIAL EDITION EPISODE

For most of my life, I thought not knowing what I was feeling was normal.

I thought everyone was guessing.

Then one morning, a quote from Winston Churchill stopped me in my tracks:

"Too often the strong, silent man is silent only because he does not know what to say, and is reputed strong only because he has remained silent."

And suddenly I found myself asking a much bigger question:

What if some of the silence we call strength is actually survival?

What if some people aren't withholding their feelings...

What if they genuinely don't have access to them yet?

In this special edition episode, we talk about emotional survival, alexithymia, childhood adaptation, external validation, self-love, self-knowing, and the sacred work of meeting yourself where you are.

This episode eventually travels from Churchill... to a conversation with my son Jeremy... and finally lands where it belongs:

With you.

If you've ever been called strong when you were really just surviving, I think this one may resonate.

For years, I thought I was searching for my purpose.

Searching for the right path.
The right calling.
The right identity.
The right version of myself.

I kept looking over the next hill, around the next corner, into the next book, workshop, relationship, or revelation.

Always searching.

And then one day I noticed something.

The path wasn't hiding from me.

The path wasn't waiting somewhere in the distance.

The path had been forming beneath my feet every time I chose to keep going.

Every heartbreak.
Every lesson.
Every wrong turn.
Every act of courage.
Every season of survival.
Every moment I thought I was lost.

None of it was wasted.

It was all becoming part of the road.

Maybe we aren't here to find our path.

Maybe we're here to walk it into existence.

🖤

"I spent years looking for my path. Then one day I noticed the path had been growing beneath my feet the entire time."

When Being Wanted Is Not the Same as Being Met

This one is for the people who have ever mistaken attention for care… chemistry for compatibility… longing for intimacy… or being desired for actually being deeply considered.

At some point in healing, attraction alone stops being enough.

Not because desire disappears.

But because your nervous system begins recognizing the emotional cost of becoming who you think someone else wants you to be.

This blog explores:

• the difference between being wanted and being met
• nervous systems and familiarity
• relational performance and self-abandonment
• why some old dynamics stop feeling nourishing
• the grief of outgrowing almost-connections
• the deep sigh that comes when your body already knows the pattern

And maybe most importantly:

What if healing is not becoming incapable of longing…

but becoming unwilling to abandon yourself just to keep longing from hurting?

This one is tender. Reflective. Deeply human.

And honestly? Probably going to hit a few places that have been quietly waiting to be acknowledged.

You don’t call it clutter.

You call it useful.

And maybe… it is.

But what happens when everything that could be useful…
starts taking up space in a life you’re actually living?

Midnight Snack E110 is one of the most personal episodes I’ve recorded.

This isn’t about being messy.
It’s not about laziness.
And it’s definitely not solved by “just decluttering.”

This is about what happens when you’ve lived through loss—real loss—and your nervous system learns:

👉 Nothing should go to waste
👉 Everything has value
👉 You might need this someday

And so you hold on.

Not just to things…
But to potential.
To safety.
To “just in case.”

In this episode, I talk about:

🜁 The psychology of holding onto “useful” items
🜁 How trauma, loss, and instability shape our environment
🜁 The difference between this pattern and hoarding (and where it can overlap)
🜁 Why cleaning doesn’t fix something that was never about time or discipline
🜁 And how to recognize when “holding” starts costing you more than it’s giving

This one is honest.
It’s lived.
And it might hit somewhere deeper than expected.

If you’ve ever looked around your space and thought,
“I don’t even use this… so why can’t I let it go?”

This episode is for you.

You don’t call it clutter.
You call it useful.
And maybe… it is.
But what happens when everything that could be useful…
starts taking up space in the life you’re actually living?
This blog is a deeper dive into something many people feel—but don’t have language for:
👉 Why it’s so hard to let things go after loss
👉 How trauma and instability shape our relationship to objects
👉 The difference between clutter, trauma-informed holding, and hoarding
👉 Why “just cleaning” doesn’t work when the root is psychological
👉 And the quiet cost of carrying everything that still “has value”
This isn’t about laziness.
It’s not about being messy.
And it’s not solved with a weekend purge.
This is about the nervous system…
and what it learned about survival, scarcity, and loss.
If you’ve ever looked around your space and thought,
“I don’t even use this… so why can’t I let it go?”
This one might meet you somewhere deeper than expected.

Let’s talk about something subtle… 👀

Not fake pain.
Not “people are lying.”

Something quieter than that.

Something most of us have participated in without realizing it.

There’s a difference between:
👉 expressing pain
and
👉 performing it

And that line?

It’s not always obvious.

Because when you’ve learned that:
“If I’m hurting… I’m seen”

Your system adapts.

Not to deceive.

But to connect.

So over time, something shifts:

You don’t just share what’s true…

You start shaping it into what’s receivable.

What lands.
What resonates.
What gets a response.

And now we’re not just healing.

We’re navigating:
👉 visibility
👉 validation
👉 and belonging

All through the lens of pain.

This isn’t judgment.

It’s awareness.

Because healing doesn’t always look like something you can post.

Sometimes it looks like:
👉 quiet
👉 unshared
👉 and deeply real

If this lands… don’t rush it.

There’s a strange kind of safety in being the one who was hurt.

Not because pain feels good…
but because being seen in pain finally feels like something.

For a lot of us, that was the first time:
👉 people listened
👉 people softened
👉 people made space

So of course the system learns:
“If I’m hurting… I matter.”

And that’s not manipulation.
That’s adaptation.

But here’s the part we don’t talk about…

At some point, the pain can stop being something you’re moving through…

…and start becoming something you’re organizing yourself around.

Not on purpose.

But in practice.

Because if being hurt is how you’re seen…

what happens when you’re not?

Who are you then?

That’s the edge.

That’s the moment where healing stops being conceptual…
and starts becoming real.

Because real healing doesn’t just change how you feel.

It changes:
👉 how you relate
👉 how you’re seen
👉 and sometimes… who stays

This isn’t about dismissing pain.

It’s about asking a harder question:

What if you don’t have to keep proving it… to be valid?

Porch Light PSA 💛

I’ve been chewing on something for about 24 hours, and when something sticks with me that long, it usually means it wants to be said out loud.

“Healing” language is everywhere right now — shadow work, trauma release, inner child, hypnosis — but not all healing spaces carry the same level of training, oversight, or safety.

This isn’t fear or judgment.
Just discernment.

A gentle reminder to ask questions, trust your nervous system, and choose spaces that truly know how to hold you.

Lanterns on.
Shadows have snacks. 🌿
