Teaching your dog how to be calm and relax when out and about is an absolute necessity for traveling and dinners on patios :) Here we are hanging at a park in Philly. We will talk about road tripping with your pup soon!!

Parker is a service dog in training... working on calmness with low distractions. Our next step is adding low level distractions and moving on from there. Parker is a 5 month old Ridgeback :)

Managing Energy and Arousal:
A five month old puppy is not for the faint of heart!! Between teething, chewing, zoomies and being on the cusp of adolescence, a pup's arousal and energy needs to be managed.
Here are some hints:
1. Practice arousal up and down games
2. When your pup's energy and arousal goes up, you need to take a deep breath and lower your energy
3. Try scatter feeding on the floor or in the grass
4. Give your pup a Kong, lick mat or chew to help settle your dog
5. Teach boundaries/place to give your pup a place he/she knows to chill out
6. Practice slow petting and slowly add a treat if it is not too exciting for your puppy
7. Slow down your movements- quick, active movements are arousing to puppies.
8. SLEEP is your puppy's friend... 16 to 18 hours! Puppies need sleep both to grow and to have time to process all of the new things they have learned.
Hope this helps!!

Rehearse the Room:
Some rooms are meant for play and other rooms are meant for relaxation and sleep. Rehearsing the room means practice the behaviors you would like to see your dog doing. If your dog is supposed to sleep and relax, you only practice sleep and relaxing behaviors and not play. Never has this been more important than with a 4 and a 1/2 month old puppy and lettuce gastrointestinal problems... 6 days and this was my puppy! Granted, he's a puppy and he wasn't perfect. But he was pretty darn awesome!!
