Cycling vs. weight‑training for leg strength.
Here is a quick comparison and practical guidance.
What each develops:
*Cycling
Builds sport‑specific muscular endurance, aerobic capacity, and repetitive force production (pedal stroke).
Improves neuromuscular economy for cycling—cadence, sustained power, and fatigue resistance.
Develops some strength (especially for climbs and sprinting) but primarily endurance‑oriented.
*Weighted leg training (squats, RDLs, step‑ups, lunges, single‑leg work)
Builds maximal and relative strength, tendon resilience, and improved force output.
Improves single‑leg control, balance, and ability to generate higher peak power.
Transfers to better acceleration, climbs, and injury prevention.
*How they complement each other:
Strength increases the engine: stronger legs produce more sustainable watts and reduce fatigue for the same effort.
Cycling refines movement pattern and endurance: trains the specific motion, timing, and metabolic systems you need on the bike.
Combined approach: strength work (2×/week) + regular cycling yields bigger performance gains than either alone—strength builds capacity, cycling builds specificity.
