This morning, The 3 was run in honor of Columbus Division of Police Officer Keith Lee Evans, whose End Of Watch was July 9th, 1995.
Officer Evans died from injuries he sustained on July 3 while directing traffic for Fourth of July celebrations on West Broad Street, west of I-70.
After Officer Evans stopped a drunk driver at an intersection, the driver became irate and attempted to drive through. Officer Evans reached into the vehicle in an effort to turn off the ignition, but the driver accelerated, dragging him several feet. Officer Evans fell from the vehicle and suffered a fatal head injury.
The 41-year-old driver was arrested a short time later and was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter.
Officer Evans was a United States Navy veteran who served with the Columbus Division of Police for 25 years. He was less than a year away from retirement and was survived by his wife and two children.
We honor the service and sacrifice of Officer Evans. His dedication and legacy will be remembered.
