Tree shape and structure makes a big difference in whether a tree is going to withstand high winds!
Having a strong central leader with supporting side branches is the gold standard for strong Tree architecture.
When this Tree lost it central leader, the side branches became over-extended and left the tree vulnerable to splitting in half!
But with proper reduction pruning and careful preservation, we are able to redevelop the shape while maintaining health and beauty!
Just reach out to me to set up an in-person assessment.

This tree broke onto the house because of bad pruning!
It was severely lions tailed, removing all the interior foliage.
As a result, it grew long tip, heavy branches, which snapped and fell on the roof.
I see this all the time in the North Houston area and it’s one of the leading causes of tree branches breaking.
Reduction pruning is the appropriate method and does the exact opposite.
Instead of thinning out the interior you reduce the length and tip weight of each branch.
This causes the branches to grow short and stout!

New construction = bad soil = weak roots = struggling landscape
If your new-construction yard is struggling, more surface fertilizer is not going to fix it. The soil itself has to be rebuilt so oxygen, water, and nutrients can actually reach the roots and support a living ecosystem.
Mulch, compost, and deep root feeding improve that soil below the surface, in the root zone.
If you’re seeing disease or insect problems on your plants, look at the soil first.

You can bolt a tree back together even after it splits!
This hundred year-old post Oak in Montgomery Texas started to split down the middle from extreme wind load on the over extending branches.
Initially, I thought three bolts would be needed, but the crack was so long I had to install four!
If your tree is splitting, and you’re wonder if it can be saved, put a photo in the comments and I’ll give you my thoughts.

Unprofessional tree care led to the death of these trees.
Four pines infested with pine bark beetles are past the point of no return.
Climbing spikes were used when these trees were pruned. That damaged the bark and gave beetles an easy way in.
Proper pruning uses ropes—not spikes—so the bark stays intact and the tree stays healthier.

Most people damage their trees by over pruning!
Learn proper pruning from a certified arborist.
Every green leaf is like a little solar panel, providing energy to the tree.
With tree pruning often less is more.
For a young healthy oak, 33% is the most you should remove in a single pruning.
For an older oak or stressed tree only 10% or less in a single session!
Don’t prune more than 1/3rd of the way up, or the tree can become top heavy. (21ft tree, only prune 7ft high)
Be sure to prune with a purpose:
- clearance
- health
- beauty
- safety
- future development
