On May 17, 2022, I became a U.S. citizen. This weekend, on America’s 250th, I found myself reflecting on that all over again, and on something else too.

With the World Cup, I’ve caught myself rooting for both countries this year. My heart goes to Mexico first — that’s where I was born — but I crossed the border at 12, and I’ve been here since 1984. The U.S. is more home to me now than Mexico is. This country gave me the chance to build the life I have, helped build two companies, exited both, flipped my first house, and now I’m building a career in commercial real estate and writing a book about the whole journey, out this fall.

Dual citizenship means my heart gets torn in two sometimes. But I love both my countries, fully. I bet a lot of you know exactly what that feels like. 🇺🇸🇲🇽
