A tragic case out of San Diego ended with the loss of both a teenage mother and her newborn child. Seventeen-year-old Jariah Edwards, who was about 32 weeks pregnant, was fatally sh*t in the head on May 30 while visiting San Diego from Arizona with family. After she was rushed to the hospital, doctors performed an emergency C-section in an attempt to save her baby. Edwards later died from her injuries.

The newborn was born in critical condition and remained on life support for over a week. On June 7, the baby passed away after suffering a severe hypoxic brain injury, meaning the child’s brain had been deprived of oxygen. The baby had shown minimal brain activity since birth, according to authorities.
