Authentic African waist beads for every waist, every body

09/14/2026

I actually think curiosity is a good thing.

But when something comes from a culture you didn’t grow up in or you simply have no connections with, curiosity should probably come with a little learning too.

Waist beads come from different African communities, so there’s a lot more nuance here than simply saying “they’re African, therefore anyone can wear them” or “you can’t wear them if you’re not African.”

For me, learning is a good place to start.

You don’t have to know everything. But you should be willing to listen when people from those cultures answer them. 🤎

If you’re someone who discovered waist beads through social media, what’s one thing you wish you’d known about them sooner?

Every time I think I’ve heard them all, somebody comes up with another one. 😂

And honestly, this is part of why I like talking about them and learning about them.

There’s so much history, culture and personal meaning behind them, but a lot of what gets repeated online flattens all of that into one story.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve ever heard about waist beads before? 👀

This genuinely surprised me.

I came across this while researching waist-bead traditions and had to share it because I genuinely didn’t know about this.

This really made me think about how easy it is to look at waist beads today and only see the aesthetic side of them.

There are so many cultural histories sitting behind these beads that I’m still discovering myself. 🤎

What waist-bead tradition have you come across that you think more people should know about?

Please share in the comments.

It could be from your own culture as well.

Thank you Bre for sharing your experience and for letting us into a little part of your journey. 🤎

I especially liked what you said about noticing how your beads sit differently at different points in your cycle and as your body changes.

I think that’s one of the interesting things about wearing waist beads for a long time.

You start to develop your own relationship with them and notice little things you might not have paid attention to before.

But I think there’s an important distinction here: noticing your body doesn’t have to mean constantly monitoring it or becoming obsessed with every little change.

Your beads can make you notice without every change needing to become something you have to fix.

And of course, sometimes you just keep wearing them because you think they’re cute. 😂

If you’ve worn waist beads for a while, what made you keep wearing them?

One thing I love about traditional tie-on waist beads is that they can move with you.

Your body can change, and that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to say goodbye to your beads. 🤎

Thank you @ divinesistah89 for sharing this part of your journey with us. 🤎

Did you know you could retie your waist beads when they become loose?
