Owen’s Birth Story PART SIX
I started bleeding pretty quickly so Elizabeth gave me a shot of pitocin. They encouraged me to get out of the tub soon after to help with delivery of the placenta and to monitor my blood loss.
I crawled on the bed and soon after, started to deliver my placenta. I felt clots come out after it was delivered but my bleeding stabilized pretty quickly. I hadn’t realized how much blood I lost but when it was time to try to use the bathroom, I sat on the toilet and immediately start hearing ringing in my ears and feeling light headed. I remember saying “I don’t feel good” to Elizabeth and Paige. They knew I was going to go down so they helped ease me to the floor… and as things started to go dark, SMELLING SALTS. Holy gross. Jenn got them in my face pretty quick and it woke me up, Elizabeth started an IV, and I just laid on the bathroom floor until I felt like moving.
I got 2 bags of fluid and felt MUCH better. I think I ended up loosing 1100-1500 cc’s of blood? Something like that. So another hemorrhage. But it was managed well and my team left a few hours later!
I did have another weird postpartum complication about a week-ish later. I started feeling pretty achey and uncomfortable. Something felt off. My bleeding was weird and the discharge didn’t seem to be trending in the right direction. I reached out to my midwife who referred me to her collaborating physician. She was able to get me in the next day where an ultrasound showed that I had retained “products” still in my uterus even though my placenta looked complete after birth. I was prescribed misoprostol and we loosely scheduled a d&c for the following Monday.
A few hours after I took the meds (around 5am) I woke up to what I thought was bleeding… nope, it was mega gross membranes. It was surprising how quickly I felt relief. My bleeding essentially stopped soon after and that was that! No D&C needed.
So it was wild. And hard. And amazing. I’d choose to birth this way every time. I’m eternally grateful to my team for keeping us safe. I’m thankful for my husband who has always trusted my desires for birth. Now to join team !

Owen’s Birth Story PART FIVE
Gradually the urge to push came on. I felt like I still had forever to go and Jenn told me to reach in to see if I could feel his head. I said “I’m not going to feel anything” but boom… there was his squishy little head just right inside. Praise God, I was almost done.

I decided to use all of the energy I had towards pushing. I couldn’t waste any of it vocalizing. I needed to be done.

Just like last time, pushing was my least favorite part. It was so powerful and intense and painful. I definitely had a look of panic in my eyes as I looked at my midwife because HOLY BURNING RING OF FIRE. Thankfully that moment only lasts for a moment because WHEW. But it certainly felt like an eternity.

Once his head was delivered, I asked my midwife to “just take him out” 😂. I had wanted to be the one to catch him if it made sense but I really really could not fathom doing it in that moment. She gently told me “I’m not going to take him out, you need another contraction”. It (again) took some time for that next contraction to come on. My midwife asked me to do some ni**le stimulation to see if I could bring on another contraction. I don’t know if the ni**le stim did it but I did have another contraction and gave it everything I had to get him OUT.

Finally, at 12:27am, HE WAS HERE! A little less than an hour after my midwife arrived. And he was all tangled up in his cord. I’m not even sure how he was wrapped… Jenn had to take a second to unwrap him before she handed him to me. And I was (mostly) done. He was perfect. And everything hurt. But I did not split in half and did not die.

Now the next goal was to not bleed too much 😅

Owen’s Birth Story PART FOUR
Around 10:45, I had a HUGE contraction and felt a massive pop. THAT was definitely my water breaking and man… did I feel SO much relief. And then panic because I had a baby as soon as my water broke last time. I immediately called my midwife and she told me she would head my way. She asked me what color my fluid was but I had no idea (even though I had a gut feeling meconium was going to be present). I then called my doula and photographer. Everyone was in motion. It was definitely baby time 🙌🏻
I went to the bathroom to check the depends I was wearing to see the color of the fluid. It was brown-ish green. Ugh. I had felt this would be the case for a few days. Not sure why and immediately thought “Jenn’s going to transfer me”. I even told Kyle to wait on filling up the tub because she might want to send me to BUMC. I sent Jenn a picture of the fluid and she asked if I wouldn’t mind listening to baby for a couple of minutes. He sounded completely unbothered by the change in his environment. I recorded it and sent it to Jenn.
She reminded me of my options but said he sounded good. Kyle took it upon himself to fill up the tub anyways, thankfully .
The first on scene was Kathryn. She lives like 10 minutes from me, so I wasn’t surprised. I kept on listening to his heart tones because I was panicking hah. I hadn’t realized it at the time but contractions took a nice big break.
Then Lindsay and Jenn got there. My fluid was significantly less concentrated with mec so I felt a little more at ease.
Contractions had started up again, more frequent, more intense, and one brought on the slightest urge to bear down. I asked Jenn to check me. I was 6-7, 0/+1 station. I was super bummed and said “I have so long to go”. Everyone silently chuckled because they knew that was a lie.
I decided to get in the tub in hopes of getting some relief. It felt amazing. At some point, Elizabeth (my other midwife) got there as well as Paige, the student. It was a bit of a blur. I definitely had moments of “why did I choose this” and “this is how I die” but knew I had to keep on because the only way out, was through. I also knew I would, in fact, not die.

Owen’s Birth Story PART THREE
But then, as the sun rose, my contractions spaced. NOOO! This was a repeat of Levi’s birth. I did absolutely no labor prep, checks, or sweeps for his birth so this was just my body’s natural pattern… but all the things I did probably didn’t help hah. It was just more really intense prodromal labor with no baby. I also had no more fluid following the initial gush. I was so disappointed, exhausted, anxious. (BUT GOD, yall. Turns out, my midwives were at another birth when I text them initially. Which is why Jenn responded to quickly. Jenn was texting with Kyle once that birthed wrapped up asking if she needed to come my way. Because things had spaced, we told her to go home and sleep. I’m actually so thankful they were able to get some rest before I needed them)
I still had my chiro and acupuncture visit scheduled that day but really didn’t want to have contractions while driving to my appointments so I asked Kyle if he could stay home. He was running on little sleep as well. I also updated my mom on the previous night so she decided to bring her stuff over to stay the night so she could help with the kids in the morning in case we had a baby.
I contracted all day, about 30-45 minutes apart. I would have one that was mild and then another that would require all of my attention and breath. I had quite a bit of pressure (all in my butt) during cx.
Around 6pm, things picked up enough that I decided I needed the TENs unit on but not enough that I needed support. My mom handled bed time.
I checked in with my doula around 9:20 and let her know things were definitely picking up in intensity but were still pretty far apart at 10-12 minutes.
Plan was to try to get some rest but man…they hurt so much. It was taking me awhile to recover from each contraction so falling asleep was difficult.
Kyle was shaking my hips with my rebozo during each contraction and I really needed it, so he wasn’t able to rest much either. I definitely cried and thought “I can’t do another night of this and it not end in a baby”.

Owen’s Birth Story PART TWO
At 39+1, I started having some pretty good contractions overnight. At one point that night, they were every 6-10 minutes, lasting 30-45 seconds. Maybe I wouldn’t make the one million appointments I scheduled?! But they faded in the morning. I let my midwife ( ), doula (Lindsay w/ ), and photographer ( ) know just in case things picked up again that night. Much to my disappointment, they did not pick up and I ended up having some really great rest the next 4-5 nights (which I am thankful for in hindsight).
At 39+6, I asked my midwife for a cervical check and sweep if it was possible. I know, do as I say and not as I do.
BUT I was 3cm/60-70% effaced/-1 station. I was SO encouraged by this exam. I knew if we ended up needing a natural induction before 42 weeks, we could get things going out of hospital.
I ended up contracting again that night, but I definitely wasn’t surprised or disappointed when things faded in the morning. I was still able to sleep pretty well in between contractions. I also had some bloody show but knew it was probably related to the sweep.
At 40+4, I had an acupuncture appointment, my prenatal with my midwife (I was 3-4cm and got 2 sweeps done and walked stairs), and some body work Meghan at . It was a busy day 😅 Meghan did some pelvic floor work and helped get baby into a better position. I scheduled a last minute visit with Dr. Sam at and another acupuncture visit for the next day.
Around 3am (I was 40+5), I felt a small but not insignificant gush of fluid, went to the bathroom and started feeling contractions almost immediately. They were pretty intense, but manageable and 8-10 min apart.
Kyle started getting a little anxious so he had me text my doula and midwife to give them a heads up. Jenn responded really quickly which was suspicious 😂
I was still coping well but thought this was definitely it, I was IN LABOR. So I tried resting as much as possible and encouraged Kyle to do the same. Things felt really big. I was vocalizing. They were taking my breath away.

Owen’s Birth Story PART ONE 🩵
You would think that knowing all the things I know about birth, I would be really chill about the whole process… right?
Wrong. I was no different prepping for Owen’s birth than I was for Levi’s. I have a very healthy fear of birth. I respect it but also know it can do what it wants no matter how well you prep. So while I was confident I could do another home birth, I was nervous that something would come up that would force me to change plans. I was also nervous to feel alllll the things again 😅
Having GDM a second time, I was really hoping to avoid going to 41 weeks. I didn’t want to have a conversation with my midwife’s collaborating physician about needing to transfer for an induction, even though I was managing my sugars super well. I had been told at 33 weeks that he was measuring 2 weeks ahead… (which can be SO off, and my doula brain knows this but my mom brain started thinking “what if it’s right this time… what if I’m growing a giant baby and my sugars have been wrong this whole time?!”)
I made the rookie mistake of thinking I would have a baby between 39-40 weeks because Levi was born at 40+1ish. I was PREPARED to go later… I just really didn’t think I would. So at around 38 weeks, I started to do the things to encourage cervical change. NORA tea, pumping, curb walking, specific stretches and movements… etc. Around week 39, I got my birth nails done (bold assumption 😅), I prepped the birth tub and got my birth team snacks set up. I even made a point to have lunch with the girls at school just to spend some one on one time with them before baby. I was cleaning the house and shaving my legs every night, *just in case*. So extra.
I decided to go ahead and schedule a chiro visit with Dr. Bree at at 39+4, an induction massage at for 39+5, some body work with Meghan at at 40+4 (also scheduled an acupuncture visit with this same day). I was busy, but it was all enjoyable/restful appointments. I wanted to get them on the calendar ahead of time so I wasn’t scrambling each day to try to get seen.
