About 16 million Americans are veterans or active duty. When you expand that to military-connected Americans, that number jumps to approximately 30 million to encompass reservists and immediate family members. This population deserves therapists who have taken the time to learn about military culture and the strengths and challenges that come along with service. I’ve loved going through the Star Behavioral Health Providers program and will complete the Tier 3 training in September. SBHP is a collab of the Uniformed Services University and Perdue University, dedicated to equipping civilian providers to serve military and military-connected members. If you’ve served or are serving, or are connected to someone who’s served, I’d love to work with you.

Another therapy history post! It’s hard to overemphasize the impact Rogers has had on modern therapy. We all have a deep need to feel understood by others. Therapy can be one of the places we experience this. Feeling fully accepted and understood can help us move through the many difficulties life throws our way.

When conflict or war affects loved ones in another country, there’s often a flood of emotions that come up. Expat communities themselves may hold differing opinions on the conflict, adding to further isolation and stress. Every situation is unique, and if you need support, reach out.

And if you yourself aren’t personally connected to a region in conflict but you know someone who may be concerned about folks abroad, check in on them. It can be a relief to know that others who aren’t directly affected care.

January is National Human Trafficking Awareness and Prevention Month in the US. Counselors, as well as many other providers in Texas, are required to take regular trainings to learn how to spot the signs and offer support to survivors. You can learn about how YOU can spot the signs in your particular workplace by googling human trafficking + (your industry).

One of the books I read this year was Meditations by Marcus Aurelius. Interesting fact about this book is that it was probably never meant to be published- it’s a collection of Aurelius’ journal entries over the latter part of his life. From what I gleaned from an introduction in this edition, he was influenced by several different philosophers and writes from his view as a Stoic. Stoicism highlights the human response to events as important in reducing suffering and has influenced many common therapeutic approaches today. It’s definitely not a perfect framework, but there are some helpful concepts such as the focus on our own agency in life and the encouragement to move in line with “virtues,” similar to values identification. It’s a good read!

Over and over I get to see clients find and acknowledge their strength, even in the midst of incredible (even seemingly impossible) challenges. It’s inspiring every time.

I know I’m running the risk of sounding trite, but gratitude is one of the interventions we KNOW can have a positive effect on feelings of well-being and connection. Whether you’re going through something incredibly difficult or just facing another day of the blahs, incorporating one of the gratitude exercises daily can make a marked difference. It can bring a sense of comfort as well as a reappraisal of our strengths and supports. Try one of the exercises listed above and see how your mood changes afterward.
