Mission: Not One More. Providing Self-Rescue swim lessons to help put an end to childhood drownings. This is why I became a Self-Rescue Swim Instructor.
Hi my name is Desiree Whisman and I am a born and raised Texan. I spent most of my childhood living in the Mid-cities area and I currently live in there with my husband and four children. I graduated from Austin College in 2000 with a BA in Biology. I taught high school biology and physics for two years before moving to Florida with my husband. In Florida, I went back to school and graduated with

Supervision is incredibly important around the water.
But supervision alone is not enough.
Water safety works best when multiple layers of protection are in place.
Supervision.
Pool barriers.
Door alarms.
And age-appropriate self-rescue skills.
A moment of inattention should never cost a child their life.
The reason self-rescue skills are so important is because theyโre the only layer of protection that goes wherever the child goes.
No matter where life takes them, those skills stay with them.
And when every other layer has failed, self-rescue skills become the last layer of protection.

This little guy is 2.5 years old and only 4 weeks into lessons.
Every child progresses differently, but consistent practice, confidence, and age-appropriate goals can create incredible growth in a short amount of time.
Our youngest students focus first on self-rescue skills like rolling over, floating, and breathing independently. As children mature and become developmentally ready, swimming skills are added on top of that foundation.
Safety first.
Skills second.
Confidence follows.

One of the biggest misconceptions about drowning is that it is loud and obvious.
In reality, drowning is often silent and can happen in seconds.
Water safety starts with awareness. Knowing what drowning really looks like can help save a life.

One of the biggest misconceptions about swim lessons is that once a child graduates, theyโre done.
The truth is that skills grow stronger with practice.
Just like sports, music, reading, or riding a bike, confidence and ability improve when children continue using what theyโve learned.
Graduation isnโt the finish line.
Itโs the beginning of the next phase.

๐ Have you ever thought of the role of drones and drowning? This may sound like a strange combination, but itโs exactly what is happening in New York. The importance of water safety cannot be overstated. For this reason, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) is trying some new ideas. Read on to learn more.
Drones and Drowning: Innovative Solutions for Water Safety Ever thought of the role of drones and drowning? This may sound like a strange combination, but itโs exactly what is happening in New York.
Drowning is fast, silent, and often unseen.
Many children who drowned were thought to be sleeping, playing, or safely inside the house... until they werenโt. Thereโs no cry for help. No dramatic splash. Just a moment that changes everything.
Thatโs why true water safety isnโt about one solution. Itโs about layers of protection working together to keep children safe when life gets distracting. โคต๏ธ
1. Install pool alarms and door locks on any doors leading to the backyard
2. Have a mesh safety fence installed that surrounds your entire pool
3. Provide your children with early infant swim instruction
4. Supervise children at all times and always have designated a water watcher on โdutyโ
5. Make the pool the first place you check if children are missing
6. Require that any and all caretakers know how to perform CPR
7. Educate family members, caretakers, and babysitters on pool safety
Most children donโt accidentally fall into the water wearing a swimsuit.
They fall in wearing whatever they had on that day.
Pajamas.
Play clothes.
School clothes.
Or, in this case, winter clothes.
Thatโs why, near the end of lessons, I like to give children the opportunity to practice their self-rescue skills while fully clothed.
Clothing feels different in the water.
It becomes heavier and can change how a child moves.
The goal is to help children apply the same skills in a more realistic situation.
This sweet girl is just 19 months old and demonstrating an independent rollover to float while wearing winter clothing.
Because water emergencies rarely happen when weโre expecting them.
