Some places stay beautiful because enough people decided to treat them that way. The wildflowers, the pollinators working through them, the stream running cold alongside it all. Leave No Trace principles exist to keep it exactly like this.
We want to hear from you!
Whether TrekFreely has been useful to you or has fallen short, we'd like to know; what's working, what isn't, and what you'd want to see next. Let us know in this super short survey!

What makes HAM radio such a natural fit for backcountry communication? Turns out, quite a lot. We broke it all down in our latest blog post — link in bio.

A GPS device is one of the best tools you can carry in the backcountry. It is not a replacement for knowing where you are.
The paper map doesn't need a satellite connection. It doesn't need a charge. It doesn't fail when the firmware update you forgot about decides to reboot mid-route. It just shows you the terrain, the same way it did for every backcountry adventurer who went before you — and that's exactly the point. The device tells people where to find you. The map helps you figure out whether they need to.
Carry both.

The sign says it plainly: when electrical storms approach, turn back. What it can't tell you is whether you built that decision into your plan before you left the trailhead.
Summer afternoon storms in the alpine are predictable in the abstract and easy to underestimate in the moment. They stack up fast — often by early afternoon at elevation — and the instinct to push a little further is strongest exactly when the sky is giving you the first signals to stop. The turnaround time you set before you go is the decision you're making with a clear head, not the one you're negotiating at treeline when the clouds are already building to the west.
Before your next backcountry trip: know where your escape routes drop below treeline, set a hard turnaround time and treat it as already made, and tell your emergency contact when to expect you back. The sign's advice is solid. The plan that makes it actionable is yours to build.
What's your default turnaround time for a summer alpine day — and how often do you actually stick to it?

The sign says descend the route and roll no rocks. Simple instructions for getting off a mountain safely — the kind of thing that only exists because enough people needed reminding.
But that's not why you came up here. You came for the part that starts just before the summit, when the valley drops away and the noise in your head goes quiet with it. The cairn, the sign, the technical descent — those are just the shape the day took. The reason was always something harder to name.

Your Garmin watch already knows your heart rate, altitude, and pulse ox. Now it shares that with your emergency contacts — live, from the trail.
We're thrilled to announce the TrekFreely Garmin ConnectIQ app is officially live. Pair your watch to your TrekFreely account, create a trip in your Trip Portfolio, and your contacts see your vitals updating in real time from trailhead to final check-in. Heart rate, pulse ox, altitude, steps — four data points, zero extra gear.
Building this with the backcountry community in mind made it worth every step — we're excited to see it out in the world. The trip includes whoever's waiting at home — now that idea lives on your wrist.
Search 'TrekFreely' in the Garmin ConnectIQ store to get started.
Too many backcountry trips go wrong for preventable reasons and too many emergencies turn worse when no one knows where someone went, or when they were due back. TrekFreely is built to close both gaps. It connects adventurers to trusted, curated resources for planning safer trips on their own, and gives them a trip portfolio to keep the people at home informed.
That portfolio turns a full plan — route, gear, and timeline — into a single link to share with emergency contacts. No app or account needed on their end. And if the adventurer carries a satellite communicator, contacts can follow their location so if someone's ever overdue, the people who'd come looking already have everything in one place.
Free forever. No ads, no paywall because that's how safety tools should be.
