Signs of progress: This plaque is at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI), across from 16th Street Baptist Church, a site of the 1963 bombing that killed four young girls. In the years following that difficult chapter, the city continued its journey of change and inclusion. Eight years later, in 1971, Birmingham was named an All-America City. Eight years after that, the city elected its first black mayor.

Reflecting on these moments allows for appreciation of how far we've come, while recognizing the work that remains.
