In these photos of the Brewster-Douglass community, you can see more than buildings. You see daily life. Children playing outside, neighbors gathering, and a trio of stylish ladies
This was one of the first federally funded housing developments for Black residents in Detroit, and for many, it meant stability and opportunity.
It’s also where a young Diana Ross once called home.

At 2014 Hastings Street, a place called Sportree’s Music Bar, once handed out souvenir photo cards to its guests.
Inside one card: two couples seated at a table, dressed for a night out, drinks poured, music playing, and a moment worth saving.
The card advertised “continuous entertainment,” records for sale, and even sandwiches at the soda bar, capturing just a glimpse of everyday life along Hastings Street.

The Gotham Hotel stood as more than a place to stay. It was a destination.
At a time when segregation limited where Black travelers could go, this space offered comfort, elegance, and belonging.

This building is Second Baptist Church, one of Detroit’s oldest Black institutions.
Founded in 1836, it served as a stop on the Underground Railroad and later became a cornerstone of the community you see reflected here.
Generations passed through these doors for worship, organizing, and connection.
Even as the neighborhood has changed, this historic structure still remains, linking the past present and future.

These storefronts and crowded sidewalks are Hastings Street, the heart of Black Bottom.
From early morning to late evening, the neighborhood stayed in motion with people shopping, working, catching up, building lives and a community of their own.
Barbershops, restaurants, record stores, all Black-owned, all within reach.
This wasn’t just a busy street. It was a self-sustaining economy that built its block by block.
