To our friends in the Carrboro and Chapel Hill area:

This cat was in the Hilmont Apartment fire. Mishka escaped and ran into the woods.

Please. If you see this cat, call the number ASAP

We are supporting residents impacted by the fire at Hilmont Apartments in Carrboro.
Over the past day, we have been on the ground delivering supplies directly to some of those displaced, and we will continue showing up as needs unfold.
This is an evolving situation. As we learn more and connect with residents, we will post updates here with specific needs and ways to help.
Please consider donating and/or volunteering if you are able. Every bit of support—whether time, resources, or funds—goes directly toward helping families stabilize and begin rebuilding after this devastating event.
Thank you to everyone in the community who has already stepped up.

There was a horrific apartment fire in Carrboro today.
We were able to support the residents with dinner and drinks because of the wonderful community in Chapel Hill/Carrboro. We would like to extend a deep thanks to Vimala's Curryblossom Café and IP3 Italian Pizzeria III for making a lot of food for the residents on a moments notice.
Day One will continue to work with the displaced residents to help meet the needs of this fire.

We are thankful to be headquartered in Durham. It has taught us volumes in how to work with community collaboration and solidifies our mission that community is the key to responding to natural and systemic disasters.

Volunteers in Durham made sure students didn't go hungry while they were out of class on Friday.

"Today is a really beautiful example of how our community takes care of each other."

We are almost ready to distribute thousands of meals to kids across Durham. But right now, we have three locations with only one or two volunteers and **at least one site with NO volunteers at all.** We want to ensure these communities and our volunteers have the support they need!

This May Day (May 1st, International Workers Day), while people rally in Raleigh with demands for justice, our May Day focus at Day One is simple: making sure kids in Durham are fed.

With school closed for the day, thousands of students will miss access to their regular school meals. That’s a gap we will not ignore.

Day One Relief is partnering with Durham labor unions and Durham Public School Strong (DPSS)—alongside parents, students, and educators—to prepare and distribute thousands of free lunches for children across Durham. No child should have to wonder where their meal is coming from, especially on a day meant to bring community together.

We’ll be turning our warehouse into a full-scale lunch production line, with volunteers assembling and bagging meals on Thursday and Friday morning leading up to May Day. It will be fast-paced, hands-on, and rooted in care—neighbors making sure kids are taken care of.
This work is only possible with your support. Every sandwich, every snack, every lunch we send out is funded by donations. If you’re able, please help us purchase the food and supplies needed to meet this moment. Any funds that are raised beyond what we need will go towards our continuing efforts feeding families in Durham for our end of year/summer family food bag distributions.

Feeding kids is the baseline. It’s how we show up for each other. And it’s what this moment calls for.
