Same generation- different stickers. Maybe it’s a southern thing -tanning? 🤷‍♀️ but we used a lot of tanning stickers! Now we are comparing estrogen patch doses. Share this with a Millenial and “lol” ✌️
Your period doesn’t stop because you “run out of estrogen.”
It stops because, as we move through the menopause transition, the ovaries have fewer remaining follicles and eventually stop ovulating regularly.
Without regular ovulation, estrogen and progesterone production changes. Your brain keeps trying to stimulate the ovaries—one reason FSH rises—but eventually menstrual cycles stop.
Menopause is officially reached after 12 consecutive months without a period, assuming there isn’t another cause.
Your ovaries aren’t just responsible for periods. They’ve been part of an entire hormonal feedback system between your brain and your reproductive system for decades.
And when that system changes, you can feel it in a lot more places than your period.
If only perimenopause came with a positive test.
The reality? There isn’t one blood test that can simply tell you, “Yep, you’re in perimenopause.”
Hormones like estrogen and FSH can fluctuate throughout your cycle and become even more unpredictable during the menopause transition. That means one “normal” lab result doesn’t necessarily rule out perimenopause.
Instead, we look at the whole picture: your age, symptoms, menstrual cycle, medical history, and whether there could be another explanation for what you’re experiencing.
Still having periods? You can still be in perimenopause.
Normal hormone labs? You can still be in perimenopause.
You don’t need to wait until your periods stop to start asking questions about your hormones.

We spend so much time thinking about how we want to look as we age.
I think we should talk more about how we want to live.
I want to carry my own luggage.
Get down on the floor and get back up.
Travel without worrying if I can keep up.
Have muscle. Have balance. Have energy.
Stay independent for as long as possible.
That future isn’t built at 70 or 75.
It’s built in your 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s—in the walks you take, the muscle you build, the protein you eat, the sleep you prioritize, and the health issues you stop putting off.
Healthy aging isn’t just about adding years to your life.
It’s about adding life to those years.

I don’t think there was a giant conspiracy to keep hormone therapy from women.
I think the truth is more complicated: science changes.
Women’s health was understudied for far too long. Then research raised legitimate concerns about hormone therapy, medical practice changed, and researchers kept asking better questions.
Now we understand more about things like timing, age, route of administration, formulation, individual risk factors, and who was actually included in the research.
And we’re still learning.
That’s the beauty of medicine. Changing our recommendations when better evidence becomes available isn’t a weakness of science—it’s what science is supposed to do.
I hope we know more about women’s health 10 years from now than we know today.
And I hope I’m practicing differently because of it.
So many amazing discoveries of HRT are coming forth in science. What an exciting time to be a woman.
Timing matters.
For healthy, symptomatic women who are appropriate candidates, hormone therapy generally has the most favorable benefit-to-risk profile when started before age 60 or within 10 years of menopause.
Why? Because estrogen affects a lot more than hot flashes—including bone health, cardiovascular function, and the brain.
That doesn’t mean every woman needs hormones at 40, 45, or 50. And it doesn’t mean you can’t use hormone therapy after 60.
It means we should be talking about menopause and hormone therapy before women are a decade past it.
The question isn’t just should I take hormones?
It’s also: when is the right time for me?
Hormone therapy should always be individualized based on symptoms, medical history, risks, and goals.
