Data Science Series | Can a Classifier Know When to Say โ€œI Donโ€™t Knowโ€?

In this Data Science Series lesson, I show how to design a small classifier that can recognise uncertainty instead of making a confident guess every time.

Using harmless classroom objects, I define the label, measurable features, honest train-test split, simple baseline, two useful error counts, and an abstain rule. I also explain why every photo of the same physical object must stay in one split and why accuracy alone can hide important mistakes.

Pause the video and complete Question 12.10 by drawing six boxes: label, features, split unit, baseline, error counts, and abstain rule. Then test whether your plan can face a genuinely new object without data leakage.

Geometry Series | Can a Stretched Map Change Distance and Slope?

In this Geometry Series lesson, I show why a coordinate grid can mislead us when the horizontal and vertical axes use different physical scales.

On a floor plan, one horizontal grid unit represents 3 metres and one vertical unit represents 4 metres. A robot travels from (1, 2) to (5, 5). I convert the two directions separately, calculate the true direct distance and physical slope, and compare them with the raw-grid results.

Pause the video and solve Vault Lock 111, โ€œThe Stretched Coordinate Axes,โ€ before comparing your reasoning with mine. The key question for every drawingโ€”and every AI answerโ€”is simple: what does one step on each axis actually mean?

Algebra Series | Why Does Adding Every Deposit at the End Give the Wrong Balance?

In this Algebra Series lesson, I show why money deposited earlier has more time to growโ€”and why adding every deposit only at the end gives the wrong balance.

An account starts with $500. Each month it grows by 1%, and then $50 is deposited. I build the recurrence step by step, calculate the balance after three months, and identify exactly which deposit a common shortcut fails to grow.

Pause the video, draw the month-by-month balance boxes, and solve Challenge 194, โ€œDeposits Also Grow,โ€ before comparing your reasoning with mine. This is also a practical way to test whether an AI-generated formula respects the timing of each deposit.

In this Foundations Series lesson, I show how percentages, rate, time, and a charging cap work together in a real battery problem.

The battery begins at 20%, charges at 15 percentage points per hour, and automatically stops at 80%. How long will it take to reach 75%? I also explain why percentage points are not the same as a percent increase, how to convert a fractional hour into minutes, and how to check whether the cap changes the answer.

Pause the video, draw a percent number line, and solve Landmark Challenge Question 85 before comparing your reasoning with the method in the lesson. This is also a useful way to question an AI-generated answer instead of trusting a confident calculation.

Data Science Series | Can Two Classes Share an Average but Be Very Different?

In this Data Science Series lesson, I show why two groups with the same mean can have completely different levels of variation.

Today's challenge: Class C scores are sixty, sixty-five, seventy, seventy-five, and eighty. Calculate its mean, range, and mean absolute deviation. Then place Class C between A and B from least variable to most variable and justify the order.

Geometry Series | Which Rescue Route Is Actually Shortest?

In this Geometry Series lesson, I use the Pythagorean theorem to compare an edge route with a diagonal rescue shortcut.

Today's challenge: The rescue vehicle travels at one point two metres per second. Find the travel time for the edge route and the diagonal route. Convert both times into minutes and seconds. Decide whether the diagonal saves more than one minute.

Algebra Series | When Do Two Taxi Fares Cost the Same?

In this Algebra Series lesson, I model two taxi fares, find their break-even distance, and use it to make a real travel decision.

Today's challenge: A family expects a twelve-kilometre trip. Calculate both taxi fares and identify the cheaper choice. Then find the savings. Finally explain why choosing only from the starting fees would produce the wrong decision for this trip.

In this Foundations Series lesson, I show how to scale every ingredient by one common factor so a recipe grows without changing its taste.

Today's challenge: A smoothie recipe for six cups uses 900 millilitres of milk, 360 grams of fruit, and 90 millilitres of yoghurt. Scale it to fifteen cups. Then check whether two one-litre milk cartons are enough and state how much milk remains.

Data Science Series | Can a Big Survey Still Be Biased?

In this Data Science Series lesson, I explain why a large survey can still be biased and why sampling design matters more than raw response count.

Today's challenge: A school of one thousand students surveys four hundred after-school library visitors and finds seventy-eight percent support for later closing. A stratified random sample of two hundred students finds fifty-six percent support. Which estimate better represents the whole school, what biases threaten the first survey, and what extra information would you request before deciding?

Geometry Series | Can a Shadow Reveal the Tree's Height?

In this Geometry Series lesson, I use similar triangles to measure a tree from its shadow and explain why the measurements must be taken at the same time.

Today's challenge: At the same moment on level ground, a one point five metre stick casts a two metre shadow, and a tree casts a fourteen metre shadow. Find the tree's height. Then a cloud changes the sun angle and the stick shadow becomes two point five metres. Explain why mixing the old tree shadow with the new stick shadow would be invalid.

Pause the video and solve it before watching my reasoning.
