It was reported this week that a change was made to the interpretation of the Endangered Species Act, one that would strike at the core of the law's purpose and intent. In response, World Wildlife Fund (WWF) issued the following statement from Ginette Hemley, Senior Vice President, Wildlife Conservation:

“For more than 50 years, the Endangered Species Act has served as a cornerstone of American conservation leadership, helping prevent the extinction of countless species while protecting the habitats and natural systems that support them, as well as communities, livelihoods, and economies across the country.

Despite this remarkable record of success, repeated efforts have been made in recent years to undermine or nullify key provisions of the law. Any attempt to reinterpret the Act's longstanding prohibition on the "take" of endangered species to apply only to intentional actions would fundamentally undermine the Act's effectiveness and make it nearly impossible to hold most violators accountable when they engage in activities that harm endangered species.

At a time when wildlife and natural habitats face mounting pressures, we should be strengthening the proven safeguards that protect nature, not weakening them. WWF remains committed to ensuring that the Endangered Species Act continues to fulfill its vital purpose for the benefit of wildlife, people, and future generations.”
