Here’s something that sometimes causes confusion: accreditation and legal school status are not the same thing.
Microschools in Indiana may operate as nonpublic schools without being accredited, while some microschools choose to pursue accreditation for additional recognition, accountability, or opportunities for their students.
The good news? Accreditation doesn’t necessarily require becoming a traditional school.
Two national accrediting organizations have developed pathways that can work well for innovative and nontraditional learning environments: WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) and the Middle States Association (MSA-CESS).
If accreditation is part of your microschool’s long-term plan, both are worth exploring. If we can help you navigate the options, reach out!

You don’t have to figure out microschooling alone.
The Indiana Microschool Network’s Regional Coordinators are seasoned microschool leaders with at least two years of experience actually starting, running, and operating their own schools. Many have also been recognized by national organizations for the innovative work happening in their communities.
In other words, they don’t just understand microschooling in theory. They’ve lived it.
From finding a building and navigating regulations to enrollment, staffing, curriculum, funding, and the thousand unexpected questions that come with starting a school, our coordinators understand the journey.
With Regional Coordinators located across Indiana, there’s someone ready to help you take your next step.

Two of your greatest allies? Your local fire marshal and a good architect.
Build those relationships early. Ask questions before signing a lease. Be transparent about how you plan to use the space. And most importantly: don’t cut corners.
It can be tempting when compliance requirements are expensive or confusing, but operating outside of local requirements can create problems not only for your school...it can make local officials more hesitant to work with microschools in the future.
We’re building a new educational ecosystem in Indiana. Let’s build it responsibly.

One of the first decisions a microschool founder may face is how to structure the organization.
Many Indiana microschools operate as either an LLC or a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and neither structure is automatically “better.”
Your mission, funding strategy, long-term vision, and desired governance structure should all factor into the decision.
Do your homework and talk with an attorney and accountant who understand small educational organizations before choosing your structure.
