Framingham To Unveil Special 325th Mural on August 13 at the Memorial Building

FRAMINGHAM - The Framingham 325th Celebration Committee’s Arts & Culture Subcommittee invites the community to the unveiling of a new mural celebrating Framingham’s history, landscape, culture, and people.

The mural unveiling will take place on Thursday, August 13, at 6 p.m. on the second floor of the Memorial Building, outside the Mayor’s Office, Room 213.

The four-panel mural was created by four Framingham artists whose work was selected through a call for submissions organized around four themes: Transportation & Industry, Education, Nature & Landscape, and Community & Culture.

The four artists and their themes are:

Catherine Gruetzke-Blais – Nature & Landscape
Patrick St. Pierre – Community & Culture
Chuck Matzer – Education
Molly Dee – Transportation & Industry

The four panels arrived in June and were installed last month on the second floor of the Memorial Building and will serve as a permanent gift to the community as part of Framingham’s 325th anniversary celebration.

“The inspiration for this mural came from George King, chair of the Framingham 300th Celebration Committee,” said Framingham 325th Celebration Committee Co-Chair and Arts & Culture Subcommittee Co-Chair Susan Scully Petroni. “At the very first meeting of the 325th Celebration Committee, George suggested that two of the committee’s goals should be a community celebration and a permanent gift to the community. That idea stayed with us.”

During Framingham’s 300th anniversary, the committee held a community carnival with fireworks along Farm Pond and commissioned an author to write a book about the first 300 years of the community.

“For the 325th, we wanted to continue that tradition of celebrating our community while leaving something lasting for future generations,” Petroni said. “The Arts & Culture Subcommittee proposed the mural as that permanent gift. We invited Framingham artists to interpret four themes that help tell the story of our community, and the result is four beautiful and very different perspectives on Framingham.”

Jessica Roscio, Director of the Danforth Art Museum and Co-Chair of the Arts & Culture Subcommittee, said the mural demonstrates the important role local artists play in telling Framingham’s story.

“Art gives us a unique way to see our community through many different perspectives,” Roscio said. “Each of these four artists brought their own vision and creativity to the project, and together the panels create a wonderful portrait of Framingham. We are excited to have this work displayed in the Memorial Building, where residents and visitors can experience it for years to come.”

The community is invited to attend the mural unveiling, meet the artists, and celebrate this new permanent addition to the Memorial Building, which turns 100 years old in 2028.

The Framingham 325th Celebration Committee also created a new community tradition with Framingham FEST, held in October 2025. The inaugural event featured more than 100 community booths and attracted more than 5,000 attendees.

Mayor Charlie Sisitsky enjoyed Framingham FEST so much that he encouraged it to become an annual event.

The second annual Framingham FEST will take place Saturday, October 3, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Framingham Centre Common. Volunteers Eileen Davis and Courtney Suncar will once again chair the event.
