John Salerno on 9/11, Service, and the Emergency That Became His Own | The Rush Outrospective 09/11/2026

THEY RAN TOWARD SOMEBODY THEY HAD NEVER MET ON SEPT. 11th | John Saleron
There was a sentence in my conversation with John Salerno that stayed with me. He talked about the firefighters, police officers, and first responders who entered the World Trade Center on September 11th knowing there was danger above them and people they did not know waiting somewhere inside. There was no guarantee of an ending. There was a job to do. John would later participate in rescue and recovery, lose friends and coworkers, and watch that mission eventually become something far different—saying goodbye.

Twenty-five years later, that distinction matters. September 11th is rightfully remembered for what was taken from this country, but embedded inside that terrible day were thousands of individual decisions to help another human being. John had already spent years in EMS, the NYPD, and the fire service, so he understood that instinct personally: somebody is hurt, somebody is trapped, somebody needs you, you move. Tomorrow, as America marks 25 years since 9/11, I want to honor the men and women who moved. The ones who came home. The ones who didn't. And the families who have carried both ever since.

Listen to my conversation with John Salerno and hear September 11th through the voice of a man who was part of the work that followed.

Carrie Crawford on Recovery, Connection, and Living Purposefully | The Rush Outrospective 09/01/2026

SHE SPENT YEARS TRYING TO BE CHOSEN. THEN SHE LEARNED TO CHOOSE.

One of the most powerful moments in my conversation with Carrie Crawford came near the end, when she said something incredibly simple: “Now I get to choose.” Think about the weight of that statement. Carrie spent years watching other people for clues about who she needed to be, adjusting herself to feel wanted, accepted, and worthy of love. Recovery eventually brought her somewhere deeper than sobriety. She began discovering her own boundaries, values, beliefs, and identity in Christ. And once you know who you are, the entire meaning of being chosen changes. You stop measuring your worth by who stays, who leaves, who approves, or who wants you. You finally have enough clarity to ask a question that may have once seemed impossible: Is this what I choose for my life?

That stayed with me after our conversation. There is tremendous freedom in reaching a place where love no longer requires you to negotiate pieces of yourself.

Watch for my conversation with Carrie Crawford on THE RUSH OUTROSPECTIVE | A Mastering the Art of Living Podcast*. This one goes deep.

John Mabry on Performing Perfectly in Public, Perishing in Private | The Rush Outrospective 08/22/2026

WHEN FAITH BECOMES SOMETHING YOU NEED
Christianity wasn't something John Mabry suddenly discovered when his life collapsed. Faith had been present much earlier. That's precisely what makes his declaration today so significant: “Christ saved my life. Period.” There is a profound distance between being familiar with faith and reaching a point where faith becomes something you actually depend upon. John had already survived, rebuilt, achieved, sought treatment, found sobriety, and tried to manufacture another way forward. Eventually he reached a place where his own strength no longer seemed capable of producing the life he desperately needed.

Our conversation goes directly into that territory. What happens when self reliance reaches its limit? What does surrender actually mean when you're accustomed to fighting your way through everything? And how does faith change when it moves from belief into lived dependence? Watch my conversation with John Mabry on The Rush Outrospective as we explore Christ, surrender, responsibility, and what it means to find enough faith for the next step when you can no longer see the entire road ahead.

I’m excited to announce that we’ve selected John Mabry to be a featured guest on THE RUSH OUTROSPECTIVE | A Mastering the Art of Living Podcast. John’s life is an extraordinary collision of survival, loss, addiction, recovery, faith, reinvention, and purpose. He survived a catastrophic car accident that took his leg, rebuilt his life and found his way to Hollywood, endured the devastating loss of his brother to an overdose, battled his own addiction, went through treatment, found sobriety, suffered relapse, and ultimately reached a point where the man who had become so good at coming back admitted, “I don’t have another one in me.” That is where this conversation gets interesting.

But the experiences themselves are only the beginning of the conversation. What interests me most is what John came to understand because he lived through them. What is the difference between rebuilding your life and actually healing it? What happens when knowing better still isn’t enough to change us? When does faith move from something we know to something we have to depend on? And how do we become whole when life cannot give us back everything it has taken? John has lived these questions at a level few people ever will, and our conversation will explore what those experiences taught him about identity, connection, surrender, faith, and the difficult work of learning how to live.

Tune in for this upcoming episode of THE RUSH OUTROSPECTIVE.

This is going to be a powerful conversation about far more than coming back. It’s about what happens when surviving is no longer enough and we have to decide how we’re going to live.

What Life Doesn't Get to Take From You with Jo Hatchell
There are moments during a conversation when you realize you're no longer talking about a person's résumé. You're talking about the decisions that shaped their life.

That is where this conversation with Jo Hatchell led.

What struck me most wasn't simply the number of organizations she has served or the friendships she has built over the years. It was her perspective. Jo speaks with remarkable clarity about personal responsibility, forgiveness, friendship, service, and the quiet discipline of refusing to let yesterday dictate tomorrow. She doesn't present life as something that happens to us. She challenges us to consider what we choose to build from the experiences we've been given. That mindset has influenced every part of her journey, from investing in young people and charitable causes to creating communities where people genuinely care for one another.

This episode is filled with laughter, unforgettable stories, honest reflection, and timeless lessons that speak to anyone who has ever faced adversity, searched for purpose, or wrestled with how to move forward. If you've ever believed that our greatest legacy is measured by the lives we touch and the relationships we build, I think you'll find something worth thinking about in this conversation.

I hope you'll take some time to watch, and if it resonates with you, I'd appreciate your like, your comments, and your help sharing it with others.

Childhood trauma does not always arrive as one event a person can point to with clean edges. Sometimes it becomes the atmosphere a child learns to breathe. Years later, that child may be called successful, disciplined, gifted, strong, or hard to read while still carrying beliefs they never consciously chose.

Joanne Richardson is the author of Virtue of Honor: Acquiring Truth and Shatter and Scatter the Lies, and she speaks with the authority of a woman who has stopped asking pain for permission to tell the truth. In our conversation, she talks about learning very young to stay out of the way, suppress emotion, read the room, perform joy, and believe her needs were too much. She also speaks about complex PTSD, the body carrying what the voice was never allowed to say, and the moment a diagnosis finally gave language to a life she had spent trying to understand. Her testimony reminds us that faith in Christ does not require pretending psychological wounds are imaginary. “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
— John 8:32

For anyone who overperforms, withdraws, people-pleases, distrusts calm rooms, avoids vulnerability, or feels unsafe being fully known, this episode may speak to something beneath the surface. Childhood trauma can explain the pattern, but it does not have the authority to define the rest of the life. Listen with care, courage, and the willingness to ask what pain taught you before truth had a chance to speak.

Success Didn’t Save Her
Joanne Richardson built the career. Engineering. Smart buildings. Executive leadership. Male dominated rooms. Big responsibilities. Real pressure. From the outside, people would call that success. But success is a strange thing when the inside of you is still carrying things nobody ever saw.

That’s part of what we get into on THE RUSH OUTROSPECTIVE | Mastering the Art of Living. Not the dressed up version. Not the “look how strong I am” version. The real one. What happens when you keep winning in public but still feel unseen in private? What happens when faith meets the part of you that achievement could never reach? What happens when truth stops being an idea and becomes the only way out?

Joanne brought a conversation with weight. Her books, Virtue of Honor: Acquiring Truth and Shatter & Scatter the Lies, are part of that weight.

Episode coming soon. Be ready for something honest.

Before Joanne Richardson had language for trauma, she had already learned to live under a lie.

The lie was not spoken all at once. It formed quietly, through silence, shame, suffering, and the long ache of feeling unseen. Over time, that lie followed her into her body, her relationships, her work, and even into the rooms where she appeared strongest.

And still, Joanne rose.

She built a remarkable career across engineering, smart buildings, corporate leadership, and male-dominated industries. She became an author, executive speaker, and courageous voice on trauma recovery, workplace integrity, faith, identity, and truth.

That is why we are honored to announce Joanne Richardson has been selected as a featured guest on THE RUSH OUTROSPECTIVE: A Mastering the Art of Living Podcast.

This will be a soul-deep conversation for anyone who has ever carried pain in silence, mistaken success for healing, or wondered whether the truth could still set them free.

Networking Is More Human Than People Think
Most people think networking is about transactions. The truth is, people are often searching for connection, direction, encouragement, and trust. That’s part of what made John R Kirk and Cowtown Networking Group stand out to me.
