Okay y’all, this is where we get into the nerdy chicken stuff 😂

I’m SO excited about how our Black Tongue Ayam Cemani line is developing. The pigmentation on these guys is exactly what I’ve been hoping to see, but a black tongue is only one piece of the puzzle.

We’re also starting to select pairings for our American ACs for the 2026 to 2027 season. I’m looking at pigmentation, structure, combs, feather quality, health, fertility and what each bird can bring to the next generation.

I want to start sharing more of the why behind our breeding choices this year. Not just pretty birds, but what we’re actually looking for and working toward.

Today is day one of getting ZenPen’s breeding program back on track

This year has kicked my ass a little between sickness, losing birds, working stupid early, this Texas heat and just life in general

So I’m slowing down and focusing on what I truly love… my American and Indonesian Ayam Cemanis and my Kikirikis

I want to try some old-school breeding methods mixed with modern research and finally keep better records along the way. Nothing fancy and probably not perfectly edited lol just raw and honest progress

One bird, one pairing and one hatch at a time… and y’all get to follow along while I figure it out

The 2026–2027 ZenPen Poultry breeding program is officially underway!

After getting a little behind on records, I had to get honest with myself. This year is about breeding with intention, keeping better records, and letting the program grow in a way that actually makes sense. Not just collecting Pokémon over here.

Ayam Cemani and American Cemani will always be my main focus, with Kikirikis and Old English Game Bantams also getting some attention this season.

We cleaned out the breeding pens and officially paired up two American Cemani trios! I am ridiculously excited about these pairings and what they may produce. Also put a pair of Whiting True Blues.

Moving forward, eggs will be set on the first of each month, with a maximum of two breeds being focused on per monthly hatch. Less chaos, more purpose, better birds. That is the goal.

I do maintain a black-tongue line of Ayam Cemani, but I will not be parting with any from that line during the 2026–2027 breeding year. That program is in its building-and-evaluating era.

American Cemani eggs, chicks, and grow-outs should start becoming available around mid-October. Keep an eye out for sales, auctions, and a few giveaways.
