1 AM roadside call. Locked up DD15 on the highway

Driver called panicking — motor wouldnt turn over, no crank, dead in the water on the shoulder. Rolled out of bed, grabbed my gear, headed out to see what we were working with.

Alternator swap in a parking lot an hour out in Easley SC 🔧⚡

Arrived at truck and found bad charging system. No juice to the batteries, dash lights dimming, driver stuck. Rolled out an hour up the road, pulled the old alternator, dropped a new one in, tested output, back on the road same day.

Got called back out to the buses in Greenville today. Second visit this month outside of contract work.

Separate bill. Paid same day. On to the next call.

Heres the thing about monthly contracts — theyre the floor, not the ceiling. Your regulars and one timers still call you for the surprise stuff.

Breakdowns, batteries, sensors, tires, lines or whatever pops up in between PMs. That extra work is on top of your retainers.

Another weekend service call. Made almost what I used to make in a WEEK at the dealer.

One job. A few hours. Paid same day.

Meanwhile my old dealer coworkers are locked out of the shop till Monday, sitting on their couch, hoping their next paycheck stretches till Friday.

This is why I left. Not because the wrenching was different. Because the MATH was different.

Roadside regen on the highway this morning. 🚛🔥

Here’s the thing most guys don’t understand about regens — 9 times out of 10, if a truck is stuck in a forced regen situation, there’s a REAL problem underneath. Bad doser. Clogged DPF. Failed sensors. Cracked onebox. Or other commin Aftertreatment issues. Just forcing a regen and rolling doesn’t fix any of that.

But this one? Different story.

Customer had been SKIPPING regens for weeks. The truck doesn’t initiate passive regens while driving he said. Also every time he tried to hit his stationary regen button — didn’t work.

So the DPF filled up with soot until the truck locked him out and forced my callout.

Hooked up. Severe soot level found. Ran the forced regen. Filter cleaned out. Truck happy. Back on the road. No codes.

BUT — the underlying problem isn’t fixed. His passive regens aren’t completing on their own during drive time. His stationary regen button isn’t triggering. That means something in the aftertreatment system is telling the truck NOT to regen when it should.

Also with over 300k miles and filter had never cleaned or replaced its probably about that time anyway. But customer just wanted to get down the road…

Could be a few different things causing the issues only way to know is keep diagnosing the truck.

Told him straight up — I got you rolling today, but this is going to keep happening every couple weeks until you diagnose WHY the truck isn’t regenning on its own. Book me back out and let’s chase it down.

This is the difference between a mobile mechanic who bills you for a regen and disappears — and a mobile mechanic who tells you the truth about your truck.

15 minutes of work. $400+ in my pocket.

Airline end repair on a brake chamber. Broken fitting was leaking air. Used a repair kit — cheap part, quick fix, huge payoff.

Only real danger? Getting hit on the highway. 😂

Real talk though — highway repairs are where the money is BUT you gotta be smart. Eyes on a swivel constantly. Never turn your back to traffic. Truck angled to give you a buffer.

I’ve seen mobile guys get killed doing this work. Don’t be that guy.

But im kidding of course, “take your time” is the most dangerous sentence a customer can hand a mechanic on the clock.

Every mobile guy watching this video already knows the feeling. Bill by the hour, hot day, customer’s got a comfy trailer with AC... you tell me what you’d do.

(For the record — my customers get real work, fair time, and honest hours. But a man’s gotta cool off and this is just a JOKE.)
