Texas insurers can't drop your home policy just because the house is old. ๐Ÿ

TDI proposed a rule on Sept. 29 that spells it out:
๐Ÿš๏ธ Age alone isn't a reason to deny or not renew
๐Ÿ”Œ Covers the roof, wiring, AC and heating, plumbing, and siding
๐Ÿงฑ Worn out or damaged is still a legit reason
๐Ÿ’ธ Roof age can still raise your premium, and some insurers switch older roofs to actual cash value, which pays less after hail
๐Ÿ“„ Insurers have to tell you in writing why they declined or dropped you
โ˜Ž๏ธ Only reason was age? TDI Help Line: 800-252-3439
๐Ÿ—“๏ธ Public hearing Nov. 3. Comments due Nov. 9.

Mostly, this isn't new. The age ban was already in TDI's rules. It's one piece of the state's response after Gov. Abbott directed TDI in August to act on home insurance costs, which his office says are up 79% since 2020.

Has your insurer ever flagged your roof just for its age?

๐Ÿ“š As of last December, 1,603 Houston ISD teachers were teaching core classes without a certification.

๐Ÿง’ 1,021 in elementary
๐Ÿ“– 204 in secondary English and reading
โž— 142 in secondary math
๐Ÿ”ฌ 135 in secondary science
๐ŸŒŽ 101 in secondary social studies

HISD applied to the state for more time to meet the certification rules in House Bill 2. Its plan is a countdown:

๐Ÿ“‰ 2025-26: 15.8% uncertified under waivers
๐Ÿ“‰ 2026-27: no more than 12.8%
๐Ÿ“‰ 2027-28: no more than 8%
๐Ÿ“‰ 2028-29: no more than 3%
โœ… 2029-30: zero

๐Ÿ’ต The plan also says teachers who aren't fully certified won't be eligible for pay for performance starting in 2026-27.

The district says it'll close the gap with its own alternative certification program, partners like Teachers of Tomorrow and iTeach, and aide-to-teacher pathways.

Parents and teachers, is this what you're seeing in the classroom?

Over $121,000. That's the estimate a Harris County records request about Flock license plate cameras came back with. ๐Ÿ‘€

๐Ÿ“ท Flock cameras scan plates and collect vehicle data for law enforcement
๐Ÿ’ฐ $121,602: the Sheriff's Office estimate for one records request

There's a lot more to this one, including why the estimate came in so high and what the county's contract actually says. If you want the full story DM us "ENOUGH" and I'll send you the article directly.

Should it be this hard to find out how these cameras are used? ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿค– An energy AI company expects more than 20% of its 2027 business to come from North America, and it picked Houston to chase it.

๐Ÿ“ Shape Digital's new office: the Ion, 4201 Main St. in Midtown
๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ Spun out of MODEC, which builds floating offshore oil production vessels
๐Ÿค Already works with Houston-based Halliburton
๐Ÿ”ฅ New tool cut unplanned gas flaring by 12%+ in one case, per the company
๐ŸŒŽ Other offices: Rio de Janeiro, Sรฃo Paulo, Singapore

It's a small office, not an HQ move. But it's one more energy-tech company choosing Houston over everywhere else.

Is AI good news or bad news for Houston oil jobs? ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ’ NHL owners met Tuesday for the first time since the Houston/Austin talks started. No decision.

Where things stand:

๐Ÿ’ฐ $3.5 billion total: expansion fee plus a brand-new arena
๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ Needs approval from three-quarters of NHL owners
๐Ÿ“ Friedkin's group has scouted arena sites, locations not public
๐Ÿ“… League expects to know Houston vs. Austin preference by year's end
โณ Daly: December isn't a hard deadline

Houston has chased an NHL team for decades. Now it's competing with Austin for the same one.

Houston or Austin: who gets it? ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿ“š Every $1 Texas puts into public libraries creates $4.74 in value.

A new statewide study put a dollar figure on what your library actually does:

๐Ÿ’ฐ $3.8 billion in total economic benefits in one year
๐Ÿ‘ท 11,200 Texas jobs supported
๐Ÿ“ถ An estimated 37 million library Wi-Fi sessions in 2024, worth $204 million (each one priced at the cost of a latte)

What's free at Harris County Public Library's 27 branches:

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ English classes, with 32,000+ students since 2024
๐ŸŽ“ Accredited high school diplomas for adults, plus a career certificate
๐Ÿ“ Help with FAFSA, college, and job applications
โš–๏ธ Free legal help pods at branches near courthouses

โณ The grant funding 10 of HCPL's English and citizenship staff ends May 2027.

Greenspoint Mall is coming down next month. The plan for what goes there instead is $150 million worth of warehouses.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ Demolition is set to start in October
๐Ÿ’ฐ $150M project from Lincoln Property Co. and New York Life Investment Management
๐Ÿ“ 80 acres at I-45 North and Beltway 8
๐Ÿญ About 1.2M square feet of warehouse and distribution buildings, plus some retail and service space
๐Ÿ‘ท About 1,200 permanent jobs expected, per the developers
๐Ÿ‹๏ธ Fitness Connection stays in a new building on the site
๐Ÿ“… First phase targeted for early 2028

Greenspoint opened in 1976, lost every major store as Willowbrook and The Woodlands Mall pulled shoppers north, and ended up with a nickname nobody wanted. Now the site is being bet on for what North Houston does well: highways, the airport, and moving freight.

Did you ever shop at Greenspoint? What do you remember most?

A new study counted 33,500+ parking spaces in Montrose and found a surplus at most times of day. So why can't you park on Westheimer? ๐Ÿ‘‡

๐Ÿš— 18,500 on-street spaces + 15,000 off-street
๐Ÿ“ 2,000+ survey responses and map comments, Oct 2025 to Jan 2026
๐ŸŒ™ 65% of respondents said weekend nights are the hardest time to park
โฑ๏ธ About 1 in 4 people who pinned a problem spot said they search 13โ€“15 minutes
๐Ÿ“ Problem areas: parts of Westheimer, Fairview, the Harlow District, school areas, southeastern Montrose
๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Fix on the list: signs, posted rates, and app listings for the Montrose Collective garage

The study isn't recommending a new garage, meters, or permit zones. It lays out a toolkit instead, and any change has to be requested through the city by residents, businesses, or property owners.

Neighbors are split, too. 48% of survey respondents want new developments to require more parking, while 71% of business owners who answered want less.

Is Montrose short on parking, or short on parking right by the door?

๐Ÿ›‘ Texas just paused permits for data centers. Gov. Abbott directed TCEQ to stop issuing them in a letter sent Monday.

โšก Pause lasts until ERCOT finishes auditing data centers connecting to the grid
๐Ÿ’ง The Texas Water Development Board is joining the audit to look at water use
๐Ÿ’ต Abbott says data centers must cover their own electrical infrastructure costs and lead to lower residential bills
๐Ÿšฐ They can't use water local communities need, and must report power and water use
๐Ÿ›๏ธ He plans to work with the Legislature to eliminate financial incentives for data centers
๐Ÿ“… TCEQ owes the governor an update by Oct. 19

Data centers run AI and the cloud, and they're heavy users of power and water. That's the tension here. The letter is public and short if you want to read the exact wording.

Should data centers pay more to build in Texas?
