When I finally noticed she was there at the end of the day My stomach sank Because I flashed back to the entire day That I spent walking dogs Talking to them in my highest pitched voice Calling them the best girl or boy Handing out treats and toys And this whole time She was at the very end Waiting quietly on the other side of the door Wanting to cry and bark like the rest of them But she sat patiently and waited for the “good girl” The squeaky toy That almost never came. I never knew she was there Because she doesn’t demand you to see her She waits But what she doesn’t know Is that the quiet black dogs In an overcrowded rural shelter They don’t leave. Because they’re never seen. No one has ever asked to meet Leia since she’s been here. She is now urgent So I’m asking you to help me get her seen For the first time, So it’s not the last.
