Birkman
Birkman International is an industry-leading behavioral and occupational assessment company. The real issues are often manifestations of these unmet needs.
Why The Birkman Method® works better:
Our personality test accurately measures productive behaviors, stress behaviors, underlying needs, motivations, and organizational orientation. Organizations increasingly rely upon personality assessments to assist them in such processes as hiring and selection, leadership development, team building, and conflict resolution. Many assessments accurately profile individuals' customary behaviors, which are often self-evident. However, people have internal needs and motivations that can rarely be seen by others and do not change significantly with age. When internal needs are left unmet over extended periods of time, people move into stress behavior. Stress manifests itself in less effective performance, lower achievement, and ultimately, a less enriching life. Delving Deeper:
Through a combination of regression and factor analysis, The Birkman Method® identifies the respondent's everyday interpersonal style (Usual Behavior), and unlike most other popular assessments, gives unique insights into underlying motivations and needs. Stress Behaviors are identified when these needs are not met. Knowing the underlying motivations and the consequences of unmet Needs give the coach, consultant, counselor, and organizational development professional an effective way to improve workplace performance and reduce conflict. In brief, The Birkman Method® includes the five following major perspectives:
1. Usual Behavior - an individual's effective behavioral style of dealing with relationships and tasks.
2. Underlying Needs - an individual's expectations of how relationships and social situations should be governed in context of the relationship or situation.
3. Stress Behaviors - an individual's ineffective style of dealing with relationships or tasks; behavior observed when underlying needs are not met.
4. Interests - an individual's expressed preference for job titles based on the assumption of equal economic rewards.
5. Organizational Focus - the perspective in which an individual views problems and solutions relating to organizational goals.

Teams don’t struggle because people are different. They struggle when those differences go unspoken.
The Workstyle Differentiators Report highlights the top three ways an individual differs from the general population—helping teams better understand how people naturally work, what they need, and where friction can show up.
That insight can lead to better conversations, clearer expectations, and a stronger appreciation for what each person brings to the team. And at the team level, those differences can become a valuable part of building greater clarity, psychological safety, and alignment.
Learn more about how Workstyle Differentiators can help teams turn differences into strengths in our latest blog.

Great managers can still lose great employees.
Not because they don’t care. Not because they aren’t trying. Sometimes, it’s because what feels supportive to one person can feel completely different to another.
A manager may think they’re giving an employee freedom, while that employee is looking for more structure. They may think they’re giving someone space, while that person needs more communication and reassurance.
Those small mismatches can add up. When employees’ underlying Needs consistently go unmet, disengagement and Stress Behavior can begin long before a resignation ever reaches a manager’s desk.
Understanding those differences gives leaders a better chance to recognize what their people need—not just manage them the way they themselves prefer to be managed.

Low turnover doesn’t always mean high engagement.
Sometimes, it means employees are waiting.
A slower talent market can make retention numbers look reassuring, even while frustration, disengagement, and unmet needs are building beneath the surface.
So the question for HR leaders isn’t just, “Who is leaving?”
It’s: “What could cause our best people to leave when the market shifts?”
Join us and Mark Wickliffe for Future-Proofing Your Talent Before the Market Shifts, a practical webinar focused on what leaders can do now to strengthen retention before employees start looking elsewhere.

There’s a lot more you can do with Birkman data than you might think.
With 67 reports covering everything from self-awareness and communication to leadership, career development, and organizational performance, Birkman gives people and teams multiple ways to turn behavioral insight into something practical.
The same assessment can support very different conversations depending on what someone needs—whether that’s understanding themselves better, improving how a team works together, developing as a leader, or navigating what comes next in their career.
And that’s really where the value is: the insight doesn’t have to stop with one report or one conversation. It can continue to support growth as people, teams, and organizations evolve.
67 reports is a lot to unpack. We’ll be highlighting a few of them soon—follow along.

Employees rarely leave for just one reason.
Pay, flexibility, and career opportunities all matter, but they are often only part of the story. In many cases, disengagement begins much earlier, when employees feel misunderstood, unsupported, unrecognized, or disconnected from their work.
That is why retention cannot rely on broad programs alone. Leaders also need to understand what each person needs to feel engaged, valued, and able to do their best work.
This article explores some of the less obvious reasons employees leave and what organizations can do to respond more effectively:
