I had the opportunity to attend the Moms Demand Action monthly meeting today at the University of Houston at Sugar Land.

I proudly support this organization because of its mission. Moms Demand Action is a grassroots movement of moms, dads, students, families, concerned citizens, and survivors of gun violence working together to help prevent gun violence in America and build safer communities.

Hearing the personal stories of those whose lives have been impacted by gun violence is truly heartbreaking. Those experiences serve as a powerful reminder that preventing gun violence is not just a political issue—it’s a community issue that affects us all.

Today’s meeting included a screening of the short film Where Peace Lives: Building Safe Communities, followed by a meaningful discussion on community violence intervention (CVI), highlights of Fort Bend County’s CVI partners, updates on supporting Gun Sense Candidates, and a hands-on activity creating encouraging message bracelets.

I was also honored to receive the 2026 Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate distinction earlier this year. I don’t take that recognition lightly, and I remain committed to supporting common-sense efforts that help protect our families, our children, and our communities while respecting the rights of responsible gun owners.

Working together, we can make our communities safer for everyone.

This year’s event marked its 8th year, and it was another fantastic way to kick off the new school year.

A special thank you to Daphne Thompson for the opportunity to share a few remarks, celebrate the grand opening of the beautiful new Thurgood Marshall High School Fine Arts Center, and bring greetings to Principal Dr. Ogechi Uwaga-Sanders, and the outstanding students, parents, teachers, and staff as they prepare for an exciting year ahead.

It was also great seeing one of Marshall’s biggest champions and fiercest advocates, Stephanie Brown, who is always showing up and showing out for Marshall and the 77489 community!

Here’s to a school year filled with excellence, achievement, and Buff pride.

Behind every ribbon cutting is a story, and the story of Freedom Tree Park is one of vision, perseverance, and a community coming together to make something special happen.

What a special and humbling experience this morning as Missouri City leaders held a ribbon cutting to officially celebrate the opening of Freedom Tree Park, the newest addition to the city my family and I proudly call home.

I was honored and pleasantly surprised when my former Missouri City Council colleague, Councilmember Floyd Emery, invited me to share a few remarks about the journey that brought this project to life.

More than eight years ago, Councilmember Emery approached me about the possibility of using Park Zone funding from my district to help move the project forward because he knew how important of enhancing the historic Freedom Tree was—even though the park was outside my council district.

Together, we met with then-Mayor Allen Owen and advocated for the creation of the Freedom Tree Park Advisory Committee. Our goal was simple: develop a vision that would preserve the history and educational significance of the Freedom Tree while creating a beautiful recreational space for families and future generations.

I also reflected on a promise I made to my predecessor, the late Councilmember Don Smith, who was passionate about seeing Freedom Tree Park become a reality. Before he passed, I assured him I would do everything I could to help make that vision happen.

Projects like this are never the result of one person. They require years of collaboration, persistence, community support, and leadership from many people. Thanks to the citizens who approved bond funding, my former City Council colleagues, dedicated City staff, community stakeholders, and countless advocates, that vision has now become a reality.

A special thank you to U.S. Congressman Al Green, who was on the program, and recalled helping us overcome a significant obstacle by working with Phillips 66 to secure the donation of an abandoned easement—an important step that made the park we see today possible.

Also, the breathtaking artwork designed by local artist Anthony Suber added another powerful layer to the park’s story. His explanation, today, of the vision behind the piece, inspired by the Underground Railroad and the journey toward freedom, was both moving and deeply meaningful.

Thank you, Mayor Robin Elackatt, the Missouri City Council, and city staff for your leadership and commitment to ensuring this important project was completed and received the recognition and attention it deserved today.

Freedom Tree Park is more than a beautiful new park. It is a place that honors the formerly enslaved people of African descent, and preserves an important part of Missouri City’s history, while creating opportunities for recreation, education, and community connection.

I encourage everyone to visit the historic Freedom Tree, learn its story, and enjoy this incredible new community asset. It is a wonderful addition to Missouri City and a reminder of what can be accomplished when a community works together toward a shared vision.

It is time to move Fort Bend County Forward…Join me this November at the polls.

I was proud to co-sponsor the Community Block Party at Blueridge Park in the Fort Bend Houston community, alongside several of my colleagues who share a genuine commitment to serving our Fort Bend neighborhoods.

This event created so many great memories, but one that stands out was watching the incredible generosity of Pastor John T. Boston, II, Senior Pastor of Fondren Seventh-day Adventist Church. In just six months as pastor, he has already made a tremendous impact in Fort Bend. He brought out a refrigerated truck loaded with fresh whole watermelons and ice-cold bottled water for the community to enjoy.

Since we didn’t have a way to unload the pallets, I saw an opportunity to help. I climbed into the refrigerated truck with another volunteer to pass the watermelons down one by one—and I won’t lie, I also appreciated the cool air for a few minutes because that Texas humidity was no joke! 🥵🍉

By the end of the day, there wasn’t a single watermelon left in the park! 🤣

A special thank you to Judge Roderick Garner and his crew for grilling hot dogs for everyone in attendance. The sack race featuring elected officials, community leaders, and residents brought plenty of laughs and some surprisingly fierce competition!

From the dancing and games to seeing children and families simply enjoying one another, this was what community is all about.

My sincere appreciation goes to Tamara Hudgen, Precinct 2055 Chair, for her vision, leadership, and dedication to bringing people together. Events like these remind us that strong communities are built through service, fellowship, and meaningful connections.

I’m always grateful for opportunities to help build community—especially alongside people who are committed to making Fort Bend an even better place to live, work, and raise a family.

I was truly grateful to attend Judge Keisha T. Smith’s 3rd Annual School Supply Drive & Resource Fair at the Four Corners Recreation Center in Sugar Land.

Seeing the smiles on the faces of children and families as they received backpacks and school supplies was a wonderful reminder of what can happen when a community comes together to serve. More than 500 backpacks, along with school supplies, were distributed, and I was honored to help by providing backpacks filled with school supplies to many families who needed a helping hand as they prepare for the new school year.

Thank you, Judge Keisha T. Smith, for your compassionate leadership and your unwavering commitment to uplifting the Fort Bend community. It was a privilege to stand alongside so many volunteers and partners who share the belief that every child deserves to start the school year with confidence and the tools they need to succeed.

We are truly better together. 🙏🏾❤️
