For years, polio was one of the most feared diseases in the United States. It caused crippling paralysis and death. Houston and Harris County had the second-highest rate of infection in the nation.
In 1951, the Southwestern Poliomyelitis Respiratory Center, the first facility dedicated to caring for polio patients, opened at Jefferson Davis Hospital. Staffed by Baylor College of Medicine doctors, it became the premier research, teaching and treatment facility for polio patients.

A big thank you to Harris Health Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital staff for making a difference in the community they serve! Through a Back-to-School Supply Drive with Meet the Streets, team members donated 365 pre-filled backpacks for students in the Kashmere area and community organizations. Children also enjoyed spinning a prize wheel filled with fun back-to-school goodies. Together, we're helping students start the school year prepared, confident and ready to learn.

Harris Health doesn’t wait for people to come to us. We look for opportunities to get out in the community meet face-to-face with people and listen to what’s on their minds so we know what we can do to be an integral part of their lives.
We do that through school programs and public safety forums.
Our Stop the Bleed initiative teaches residents at Houston area schools and other community organizations to act as competent first responders. The goal is to make bleeding control skills as common as CPR to give victims a better chance of survival while emergency medical professionals head their way.
Each year, Harris Health facilitates Shattered Dreams, an unforgettable two-day school-based program that demonstrates the dangers of impaired driving, especially from alcohol. High school juniors and seniors get a look at the sobering real-life consequences as they participate in a car crash reenactment on their campus, complete with emergency medical response teams from police and fire departments. The “impaired driver” is arrested, goes before a judge, faces manslaughter charges and heads to prison. Additionally, a group of students visit Harris Health Ben Taub Hospital to see and learn first-hand the dangers of impaired driving and the deadly consequences.
