In recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we will feature patients who are successfully undergoing treatment or have completed treatment for breast cancer. Every week we will highlight a survivor and share their personal account of resilience, determination and passion for living—and now sharing their experiences to encourage others facing cancer.

Today, Dr. Esmaeil Porsa joined HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and community leaders at Houston’s Open Door shelter to highlight the STREETS program, which will help expand treatment, recovery, and housing support for people experiencing homelessness, serious mental illness, and substance use disorders. Lasting recovery is built through relationships, and those relationships are built locally. Secretary Kennedy announced that eight communities will receive a total of $96 million for homelessness and mental illness care. The communities in Ohio, Oklahoma, Michigan, Texas, West Virginia, Florida, North Carolina, and Louisiana will receive $3 million a year for four years. Harris Health is honored to be present for this collaborative effort and announcement to improve lives through compassionate, community-based care.

For more than 45 years, our name was Harris County Hospital District. It served us well, but our mission expanded. We adopted the doing business as (DBA) name Harris Health System on Sept. 6, 2012 to reflect our broader scope of care, and subsequently shortened our name to Harris Health. Small babies. Big stories. 📚💙 Harris Health Ben Taub Hospital's nurseries participated in the Babies with Books Read-a-Thon to promote early literacy, bonding and healthy development for our tiniest patients. Because every child deserves a great start, one story at a time.

When Eolyn Roberts was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017, she felt a range of emotions, but
her faith is what got her through treatment.

“I was on my way to Bible study when I received the news that I had cancer,” she says. “A friend
told me, ‘I don’t know what you’re going through, but God wants to use you to show others how
to go through hard things.’”

And that’s what she’s done during her cancer journey.

“Harris Health’s Art Therapy Cancer Support Group has given me a family,” she says. “This is an
incredible support system. We can cry, laugh and share what we’re going through, all while
painting a beautiful piece. We encourage each other through our different cancer journeys.”

In January 2025, Oscar Gomez was in a car accident and suffered a broken right leg, two broken ribs, a collapsed lung and internal bleeding. He was immediately taken to Harris Health Ben Taub Hospital where he underwent multiple surgeries. He was eventually released from the hospital to begin physical therapy.

“I look forward to coming to therapy because my therapist really challenges me,” Gomez says. “I like coming here and knowing the machines I’m going to do, and when I leave, I feel satisfied that I did something right, you know, feel accomplished.”

He says in addition to his therapists, his mother is his biggest motivation.

“If it wasn’t for her, I would not have made it through this,” Gomez says.

Gomez’s doctor estimated a year for recovery. He is looking forward to beginning his career as an electrician again and his ultimate goal—running.
