In March 2026, MIDDLE school students from Hurley, Buchanan County, Virginia traveled as the visiting team to a basketball game at Mountain Mission School in southwest Virginia. During the game, students waved Confederate flags and reportedly yelled racial slurs at a home team made up largely of Black players — many of them students from across the U.S. and multiple countries.

The video went viral, triggering national backlash. Some students reportedly received death threats afterward.

But here’s what many people missed: this was not a few kids secretly bringing flags into a gym. Hurley High School’s longtime mascot was a Rebel soldier carrying a Confederate flag. Confederate imagery was reportedly painted on school property, displayed in hallways, and used on athletic merchandise for years. School leadership and community members had defended the symbolism as “heritage” and tradition.

Mountain Mission School — a predominantly Black Christian boarding school — later responded publicly, saying symbols that contribute to division are not appropriate on their campus and that every student deserves to feel safe and valued.

The controversy is bigger than one flag. It is about what institutions normalize, what children absorb, and how “heritage” arguments change when Confederate symbols are directed at Black students during a school sporting event.

Hurley High School is scheduled to close after the 2025–2026 school year as Buchanan County consolidates schools into the new Southern Gap High School this fall. The Confederate mascot will not continue there.

The “heritage, not hate” defense collapses in context. You drove to their gym, as the visiting team, and waved that flag at Black children. Whatever you meant privately, the act was a message.

Bottom line: the school may disappear, the mascot may change, and the flags may come down — but the culture that normalized it does not vanish overnight. @abigailspanberger 05/23/2026
