60 years ago Ford didn’t just win Le Mans — they ended an era. Six straight years of Ferrari domination at the 24 Hours, gone in one night.
Ford answered with the GT40 Mk II — a 7-liter monster built with one job: beat Ferrari at their own race, on their own turf.
What happened at the finish line on June 19, 1966 is still one of the most talked-about moments in motorsport history. Three factory GT40s crossed the line together for Ford’s iconic 1-2-3 sweep — but it was car Number 2, driven by Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon, that got the win on a technicality while Ken Miles — the man many say deserved it outright — settled for P2.
Controversial? Absolutely. Legendary? No question.
This is that car. That livery. That number. 60 years on, still one of the most iconic liveries to ever turn a wheel at La Sarthe.
Ferrari’s reign ended here. America’s greatest racing underdog story was born here.
