Dawn Redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides)

One of the fastest-growing shade trees, reaching 70+ feet tall, with soft, feathery foliage that turns a beautiful copper color in fall before dropping for winter. It thrives in full sun and moist, well-drained soils, making it an excellent choice for larger properties. A living fossil and a stunning specimen tree, it provides beauty, shade, and valuable wildlife habitat.

American Hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana)

A slow to moderate-growing native understory tree that matures around 20–35 feet tall, perfect for smaller landscapes. It prefers part shade to shade and moist, well-drained soils but adapts to a variety of conditions. With beautiful blue-gray “musclewood” bark, outstanding fall color, and excellent wildlife value, it’s one of Kentucky’s most underused native trees.

Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis)

A graceful evergreen that typically reaches 40–70 feet tall, growing at a slow to moderate rate into a soft, pyramidal form. It thrives in moist soils with partial shade, though it tolerates more sun with adequate moisture. Its year-round greenery provides privacy, nesting habitat for birds, and a peaceful woodland character that’s hard to match.

Some projects take patience, precision, and countless individual stones.

This custom natural stone yin-yang patio is finally complete beneath a timber-frame style pergola, creating a peaceful gathering space that reflects balance, craftsmanship, and timeless materials.

Every piece of this patio was individually selected and placed to create a one-of-a-kind design that will be enjoyed for years to come.

It’s always rewarding to see a vision become reality.

One of the small details that can make a big difference in a tree’s long-term health is exposing the root flare.

Today we planted around an existing dogwood. Before doing anything else, I performed a root collar excavation, removing a couple of inches of excess soil and mulch that had built up around the base of the trunk. In this case, it wasn’t buried too deeply, but sometimes I have to remove much more before the tree’s natural root flare is visible.

Trees aren’t meant to look like telephone poles going straight into the ground. At the base of the trunk, it should gently widen where the roots begin. When soil or mulch is piled against the trunk for years, it can contribute to decline, decay, girdling roots, and other long-term problems.

After exposing the root flare, we expanded the mulch ring and added a groundcover that will provide beautiful spring blooms while helping suppress weeds and protect the soil.

Sometimes the most important improvements in a landscape aren’t the most obvious—but they’re the ones that help plants thrive for years to come.

Had a good time this week with Organic Association of Kentucky learning about organic methods and pollinator habitat at K State Farm. It was a hot but beautiful day.
