Connecting learning, beliefs, and action through OT Education.

What can a game teach us about participation? πŸ•ΉοΈπŸƒβ™ŸοΈ

A lot! In labs, OTD students use something as simple as a round of UNO to dig into positioning, endurance, fine-motor demands, and how access to play changes the whole experience.

For many people, play is a meaningful activity, and OTs exist to help people participate in what matters to them.

What's an activity that means something to you?

Care starts before the task. 🀍

Here, our OTD students are taking a moment to rest and connect with their client before beginning oral care, because rapport is a part of the process.

Sometimes the most important thing a student can practice is slowing down.

Myth: OTs only work with people recovering from injuries. ❌

Reality: "occupation" just means any meaningful activity you need or want to do. This could be brushing your teeth, cooking dinner, or playing a sport.

OTs may find themselves helping young students learn how to follow directions, participate in tabletop learning tasks, and engage in fine-motor activities, all while considering the physical, cognitive, and environmental factors that affect each individual, allowing them to tailor treatment accordingly.

Thumbs up for orthotic fabrication! πŸ‘

These students just finished fabricating their own delta cast wrist cock-up thumb spica orthotic, and they've got the proof to show it. πŸ™Œ

Someone tries it one way. Someone else tries it another.

Every individual brings a unique perspective. Learning in a close cohort lets students compare notes, test approaches, and learn how to interpret a situation so that the client receives the best outcome.

No one figures it out alone. We’re in this together! πŸ™Œ

Ever had someone give you instructions that you couldn't follow? πŸ€”

During labs, our OTD students take turns as both practitioner and client, feeling the pace, the physical demands, and even the uncertainty of a new task from the other side.

It's not a real client experience, but it's enough to prompt important questions about comfort, dignity, communication, and choice.

Connections matter in OT. The interactions OTs have with their patients help the healing process by giving OTs personal insight into the needs of every individual.

Our students learn within a cohort β€” a model based around connection from day one. As they lean on one another through exams, labs, and career preparation, the power of learning in a community shines through. 🀍

Hot. Cold. Repeat. πŸ”₯🧊

A contrast bath in action, one of the hands-on techniques our OTD students are mastering to help future patients manage edema and get back to the activities they love.

Students role-play therapist and patient, giving them perspective from all angles and letting them have some fun along the way!

There’s always something exciting happening during labs. πŸ™Œ
