Week 1: “Check Your Roots”

Your stability in turbulent times is determined by the depth of your roots, not the strength of the storm.

Primary texts: Colossians 2:6–7, Matthew 13:20–23, Jeremiah 17:7–8, Psalm 119:11.

Economic uncertainty, cultural instability, personal pressure, disappointment, church challenges, family issues, and unexpected changes do not necessarily create instability in us; often, they expose where instability was already present.

Jesus explains this in Matthew 13. The problem with the stony-ground hearer was not the seed. The Word was good. The problem was that the Word never developed enough depth to sustain the person under pressure. They received it with joy, but they had “no root in themselves.” Their response was emotional, but their commitment had not become established.

That gives you an important statement for the lesson:

“Emotion can start you, but only commitment will establish you.”

A person can shout over a Word, agree with a Word, post a Word, repeat a Word, and still not be rooted in that Word. Roots are developed when the Word remains in you long enough to govern what you believe, how you think, what you choose, and how you respond when circumstances contradict what God said.

Then move into Colossians 2:6–7:

“As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith…”

Paul connects receiving Christ with continuing to walk in Christ. Salvation is not simply an introduction to Jesus; it begins an entirely new way of living.

This is where your teaching on “Lord” becomes important. Kurios carries the sense of lordship, authority, ownership, and mastery. Calling Jesus Lord means He is not simply being invited to assist with our plans. His authority now governs our lives.

A powerful question for the class would be:

“Is Jesus only your Savior, or have you actually surrendered to His lordship?”

Because if Christ is Lord, He gets to decide how we respond, what we release, what we pursue, who we forgive, how we live, what we prioritize, and what we refuse.

Then introduce the root-system analogy.

When we came into Christ, God did not simply improve our old life. We were transferred into another kingdom. That means some of the things we previously depended on cannot sustain the life God is now calling us to live.

Old roots may include approval, emotions, money, relationships, recognition, position, personal control, tradition, fear, or even our own understanding.

But the new root system must draw from Christ.

“Whatever feeds your roots will eventually determine your fruit.”

Jeremiah 17:7–8 becomes the picture of the rooted believer. The tree survives because its roots have located a source deeper than the environment around it.

The heat still comes.

The drought still comes.

But the tree remains productive because its source did not disappear when conditions changed.

That gives PLC another strong declaration:

“My environment is not my source.”

Then bring the lesson into Psalm 119:11:

“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”

Hiding the Word is more than memorizing verses. It is allowing Scripture to pe*****te our internal life until it begins correcting our thinking, confronting our desires, disciplining our emotions, and directing our decisions.

The goal is not simply to know Scripture.

The goal is for Scripture to know us—to expose what is in us and bring us into agreement with God.

For application;
four “root checks” for Week 1:

1. What am I drawing strength from right now?
2. What happens to my faith when circumstances become difficult?
3. Is the Word changing my decisions, or am I only hearing it?
4. Is Jesus truly Lord over the area where I am currently struggling?

Deepening Yout Roots:

“Before you ask God to change the storm, ask Him to deepen your roots.”

Daily practice: Choose one Scripture from the lesson. Read it morning and evening. Meditate on it. Write what it reveals about your thinking, emotions, decisions, and behavior. Then identify one adjustment you will make because of the Word.
