Most homes rely on one ceiling light to do all the work. And that's exactly what makes a beautiful space feel flat and unwelcoming at night.

Here's the rule we follow in every project: every room needs three layers of light.

Ambient light fills the room — ceiling fixtures and recessed lighting. Task light does the work — lamps beside a sofa, pendants over an island. And accent light creates the mood — anything that adds a soft glow at eye level and gives the room depth after dark.

Look at this living room, and you'll see all three working together. That's what makes it feel warm instead of lit.

Put them on dimmers, and the same room will feel completely different the moment the sun goes down.

Mixing metals — yes, you can. And you should.

One of the most common questions we get: "Can I combine gold and silver in the same room?" The answer is absolutely yes — when it's done with intention.

Here's our rule of thumb:

Choose a dominant metal (say, warm brass) and let it lead. Then bring in a secondary metal — like brushed nickel or matte black — as an accent, not a competitor. The key is balance and repetition. If you introduce a second metal, echo it at least twice in the space so it feels deliberate, never accidental.

Mixed metals add depth, warmth, and a layered, collected-over-time feeling that single-metal rooms often lack. It's one of the easiest ways to make a space feel elevated and personal.
