Dear Reader,

Happy almost Halloween! Well, it’s a way off, but you’ll notice every store out there is already getting ready. Of course. Naturally. Along with the Christmas holiday season, it’s a time for a great commercial season.

We love costumes and decorations!

For our family, it’s a lot of fun. I met Dennis at a Halloween party. I was pledging for a club at the time and a member of the club’s co-club for young men thought it would be funny to make me go sit on his lap.

The kids love it. According to them, we met on Halloween and it’s been “Trick of treat!” ever since.

I do love Halloween. As a child, I got a great story from my Irish Granny about the Celtic traditions of the holiday. Sometimes they were fun and factual. Some were spooky!

When I was young, the crew who immigrated from Ireland was around, and all of them loved stories and fantasy and as a kid, sometimes you had to wonder what was and what wasn’t real!

But, hey. I was a theater major at college. Still love costumes, live performances, movies . . . being entertained!

On the more somber side, it’s true that a night filled with costumes affords those with diabolical intentions to get away with a bit.

And that’s the crux of this story for Jackson and Angela Hawkins Crow. Well, let’s face it. They know a holiday like Halloween is always going to have its twists!

It’s in the story, but it’s true that our “Trick or treating” does fall back to a time when it was a night in which the poor could ask for food – and receive it. The day put an end to the harvest season and it’s true, too, that the early Celts believed that it was a night when the veil between the living and the dead might be lifted.

Not necessarily in a bad way!
