Embracing Embryo

I came in already crowning. Things moved so fast that I was actually signed into the hospital after she was already here. I completely understand the urgency and the energy in that room. But even in the middle of all of that, here is what happened: 1. I requested delayed cord clamping. It was ignored without explanation. 2. My pain after delivery was dismissed. This was my third birth. I know what cramping feels like. The afterbirth pain was unbearable and he treated it like I was exaggerating. 3. He spoke to me like I was seeking drugs rather than like a mother who had just given birth and deserved to be heard. 4. His bedside manner before and after birth was unacceptable. Not once did he make me feel like my concerns mattered. Black maternal health is not a talking point. It is something Black women live and feel in real time, in real delivery rooms, with real consequences for our recovery. We are dismissed. We are not believed. And we carry that with us long after we leave the hospital. I deserved better. We all do.

My labor was an emergency, so I didn't get to choose my doctor... and I wouldn't choose that experience again. It made me realize how important it is to feel understood in moments like that. Ladies, choose your providers wisely. Be honest... Do you think things would be different if more people actually understood what childbirth feels like?
