Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Struck During Traffic Stop on Interstate 65

DAVIDSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE - Slow Down Move Over Inc. is deeply concerned following reports that a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper was struck Tuesday afternoon while conducting a traffic stop on Interstate 65 southbound near Briley Parkway.

While details surrounding the incident remain under investigation, this serves as yet another stark reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers, tow operators, firefighters, EMS personnel, highway maintenance crews, and roadside service providers face every day while working just feet away from high-speed traffic.

Every traffic stop and emergency response requires first responders to focus on protecting the public. They should not have to worry about whether an approaching driver is paying attention.

Far too often, crashes involving emergency personnel are entirely preventable. Distracted driving, speeding, impairment, and the failure to obey Move Over laws continue to injure and kill those who have dedicated their lives to serving others.

• Move over whenever it is safe to do so for any emergency, recovery, or service vehicle displaying emergency or warning lights.
• If changing lanes is not possible, significantly reduce your speed.
• Eliminate distractions by putting your phone down and keeping your eyes on the roadway.
• Stay alert and expect the unexpected whenever approaching an incident scene.

EARLY MORNING CRASH ON I-20 SERVES AS ANOTHER WAKE-UP CALL

Just after 5:00 a.m. on Interstate 20 westbound near Mt. Vernon Road in Douglasville, a tow truck operator was doing his job when another driver’s day changed in an instant.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, a 39-year-old driver reportedly fell asleep behind the wheel and crashed into the rear of a tow truck. She was transported to the hospital with injuries. Thankfully, the tow truck operator was not injured.

This is exactly why Slow Down Move Over exists.

Tow operators, law enforcement, firefighters, EMS personnel, and highway responders don’t get to choose when or where they work. They stand just feet from traffic while helping complete strangers. One moment of fatigue, distraction, or inattention is all it takes to turn a routine service call into a tragedy.

This time, the tow operator went home.

Next time, someone may not.

If you’re tired, pull over and rest. No destination is worth risking your life or the lives of the men and women working along our roadways.

When first responders are working a fatal crash scene, that is NOT your entertainment.

While investigating a fatal crash on Interstate 10 near Willcox, Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers watched traffic back up as drivers slowed down and pulled out their phones to film the scene. The result? Multiple near-miss crashes that could have created even more victims.

Arizona DPS did exactly what needed to be done.

Sixteen drivers were cited for violating Arizona’s hands-free law, and another driver was arrested for DUI.

This is what real traffic safety enforcement looks like.

Every time a driver takes their eyes off the roadway to record someone else’s tragedy, they become part of the problem. A split second of distraction can turn one fatal crash into two.

We applaud the Arizona Department of Public Safety for making enforcement a priority instead of looking the other way. We hope every state follows their lead. Drivers who film crash scenes while operating a vehicle should expect a citation, not likes and shares.

United States Emergency Responder Struck-By Death #22 of 2026 is Suffolk County Sheriff Corporal Brett Martin, 51 who was struck and killed assisting a motorist.

It is with profound sadness that Slow Down Move Over, Inc. mourns the loss of Corporal Brett Martin, 51, of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, who was killed Monday night while doing what first responders do every single day… putting the safety of complete strangers ahead of their own.

Just after 8:30 p.m. on Interstate 95 southbound in Boxford, Massachusetts, Corporal Martin stopped to assist a stranded motorist. While helping someone in need, he was struck by an oncoming vehicle. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he later succumbed to his injuries.

He did not lose his life chasing a criminal.

He did not lose his life in a gunfight.

He lost his life because he stopped to help.

Every flashing light on the side of the roadway represents someone’s husband, wife, mother, father, son, daughter, friend, or partner. They deserve to return home after every shift. Yet time and time again, families are left planning funerals because drivers fail to slow down, move over, or simply pay attention.

This tragedy is another heartbreaking reminder that roadside incidents are among the most dangerous situations first responders face. A disabled vehicle can be replaced. A life cannot.
