The song was released in November 1981 as the fourth single from The Human League's third studio album, Dare. It reached No. 1 in the UK, the USA, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, and Norway.

Written by Philip Oakey, Jo Callis, and Philip Adrian Wright, the conversational vocal duet between Oakey and Susan Ann Sulley became the coveted UK Christmas No. 1 of 1981 and gave the pioneering English band their first No. 1 single on the US Billboard Hot 100, widely credited with kickstarting the massive "Second British Invasion" of the American pop charts in the early 1980s.
