My cousins told me Grandpa's basement was "junk" and offered me $300 to clean it before the estate sale, but behind the furnace I found a water-stained envelope marked with my maiden name. Inside were 17 savings bonds dated before my sons were born. When I called cousin Dale, he said, "Burn it. It's not yours." By morning, I had the envelope in a Bible cover and an appointment at First Farmers Bank.
By morning, I had slept 2 hours with the envelope tucked inside my old zippered Bible cover, the one with the broken handle from vacation Bible school.
Grandpa Henry's house in Moberly had been empty for 6 weeks. The cousins wanted everything done fast. Dale wanted the tractor sold. Pam wanted the walnut hutch. My brother Alan wanted "no drama," which meant he wanted me to stop asking questions.
I had been the one taking Grandpa to appointments after he stopped driving. I knew the house better than they did. Which step squeaked. Which burner on the stove clicked but didn't light. Which coffee can held rubber bands and which held screws.
So when Dale said the basement was all junk, I should have wondered why he cared so much.
It smelled like dust, oil, and old potatoes down there. Grandpa kept a wooden shelf by the furnace stacked with Mason jars, Christmas tins, paint cans, and 9 boxes labeled "misc." in his blocky handwriting.
I was sorting through a box of extension cords when my sleeve caught on a loose piece of paneling.
Behind it was an envelope.
Not hidden like treasure in a movie. Just shoved back there where nobody under 60 would want to bend.
It had water stains along one edge and my maiden name written across the front: "For Nancy Lee Harper."
My hand started to shake before I even opened it.
Inside were savings bonds. Seventeen of them. Some from 1984, some from 1987, one from 1991. All payable to Henry Harper or Nancy Lee Harper.
I sat right there on the concrete floor next to a dead cricket and read every line.
I had not been anyone's favorite in that family. I was the divorced cousin with 2 boys and a waitressing job. Grandpa helped me with tires once, and Dale still brought it up at Thanksgiving like I had robbed a bank.
I called Dale because I was stupid enough to think there might be an explanation.
He answered from what sounded like a drive-thru.
When I told him what I found, he got quiet.
Then he said, "Burn it. It's not yours."
Not "What envelope?"
Not "Let me see."
Burn it.
That was the twist of the knife. He already knew enough to be afraid.
I hung up and called First Farmers Bank, but they were closed. So I took the envelope home, slid it into the Bible cover, and put it under the folded towels in my hall closet. Then I moved it again because that felt too obvious. Then again.
By 2:13 AM, I was sitting at my kitchen table with a glass of tap water and Grandpa's old magnifying glass, checking serial numbers under the yellow light.
One bond had a sticky note on the back.
Not Grandpa's writing.
Pam's.
It said: "Ask Dale if N.L.H. can be excluded if unclaimed."
I read it three times.
The next morning, I put on a clean blouse and drove to First Farmers. The teller was a young man named Cody who looked like he still got carded for lottery tickets. He took the first bond, typed for a while, then went to get the branch manager.
The manager, Mrs. Whitaker, brought me into a glass office and closed the door.
She laid the bonds in a neat stack and said, "Mrs. Ellis, I need to make a phone call before you
