Utmost Performance
Utmost Performance offers cycling coaching to riders of all ability levels. I was a part of the Florida 6A State Championship team in cross country in 1998.
If you have something you'd like to achieve on the bike Coach Mario can help you get there. I started my journey in to Endurance Sports in high school where I ran track and field and cross country. I went on to run collegiately at Florida International University and the University of North Texas. After graduating with my Master's Degree in Sport Psychology I got into cycling. I have been racing bikes for the better part of 15 years. I have enjoyed success on the bike having won Texas State titles in the Time Trial and Road Race. My coaching career spans 10 years where I have worked with high level athletes and teams in addition to regular folks who have goals and want to go fast. I derive great satisfaction in helping an athlete of any level chase after a goal and execute their training plan in order to do so.

More rest โ less training. ๐ดโโ๏ธ
Been reading Marius Bakken's Norwegian Method book and one idea stuck with me: taking longer rest between intervals โ not shorter โ can actually give you a better sweet spot workout.
Think about a 4x10 min sweet spot session. Traditionally you'd rest 2-3 min between reps. But push that to 5 min and something interesting happens โ your lactate drops, your breathing settles, your heart rate steadies. You show up to the next interval in a better place to actually do quality work.
Same power. Same heart rate targets. But less strain underneath the surface. That adds up over a training week โ and over a season. ๐

Ever crush a workout and then feel off on every ride after that? ๐
Here's the thing โ that great session probably happened because you were relaxed, not because you were trying harder. But the second you turn it into your new "standard," you lose the exact thing that made it good in the first place.
Good days and flat days are both just part of the process. Neither one means anything on its own.

๐ดโโ๏ธ Ever raced a crit while arguing with yourself the whole time?
That's what happened when I made a last-minute call to jump into a Masters race I wasn't even supposed to do ๐ Engage, back off, engage, back off... turns out that's not a strategy. It's just indecision in a race kit.
New blog is up https://linktr.ee/utmost_performance โ the story, the lesson, and how our guys turned around and put our numbers to work in the A race (2nd place finish included ๐ฅ)

๐ดโโ๏ธ๐ฅ Directed my first Hotter Than Hell this yearโฆ then put on a number and raced it too.
Warming up, my heart rate was already sitting in the 150s at an easy pace. Not a good sign. Raced anyway. ๐
New race recap is up, the honest coaching lesson behind it, and why your body usually tells the truth before your mind wants to hear it.

I thought I knew Hotter Than Hell after racing it 10+ times Turns out, I had only seen one side of the tape Planning, Pivoting, Problem-solving. Letting go of what I couldn't control.
Hotter Than Hell 2026 taught me a lotโand I'm already thinking about how to make 2027 even better.
To every racer who showed up โ thank you. This event does not exist without you.๐ซก๐ดโโ๏ธ๐จ

More suffering doesnโt always mean more speed. ๐
We love to rush our rest periods between intervals, thinking a shorter break builds better endurance. But what if adding just two extra minutes of recovery actually makes you a faster, more resilient cyclist?
Longer rest = better lactate clearance, a true heart rate reset, and 100% quality on your next effort instead of leftover fatigue.
Donโt let your ego dictate your recovery. Protect the integrity of your intervals. ๐ง โก

Ever pushed yourself to the absolute limit and still come up short? ๐โโ๏ธ
A few years ago, my ambitious 100-mile ride ended at a gas station, completely drained by the summer heat. โ๏ธ๐ฅ Looking at this photo now, I don't see failureโI see the courage to attempt something genuinely hard. Whatโs the toughest physical challenge youโve taken on recently? Let me know below! ๐๐ https://linktr.ee/utmost_performance
The goal isn't to finish the workout...
It's to protect the quality of every interval. ๐ช๐ด
