Happy Birthday to the real favorite in our house! 🧡

I might run this account, but let’s be honest: he’s the fun one. Happy Birthday to the guy who brought the GSP breed into our lives, took the dogs on all their favorite hunting adventures back in the day, and constantly supports all of our dog-crazy shenanigans.

Rule-enforcers (me) never stand a chance against the fun human, which is exactly why Lylle holds him as the absolute highest tier of human.

We love you so much—wishing you the happiest birthday today! 🎂✨

Nobody really prepares you for the emotional tightrope of loving an aging dog.

The gray-muzzle years are a wild mix of emotions. You’re constantly tracking the little things… adjusting the daily routine, double-checking their steps, and living with that persistent background hum of worry. You trade spontaneity for their comfort, and your heart feels a little more fragile every day.

But getting to be their safe space while they grow old? It’s the absolute best job in the world.

Gordie graced our lives for almost 14 unforgettable years, and he’ll always be a part of us. And then there’s sweet Lylle—who joined us at 4, is now a spunky 13, and continues to teach us what resilience and happiness look like. Every worry is worth it for a smile like hers.

To everyone currently navigating the gray-muzzle years or carrying the memory of a senior soul: Happy National Senior Pet Day and hugs to you for being in the most heartbreaking and challenging yet rewarding phase yet 🧡

Sending you all a smile today 🧡 No clever caption or heartfelt story. Just a girl with a crooked tooth smile 😃
Have a great day, friends!

Six months without you, and I’m still learning how to balance a smile for the world with the quiet heartache underneath. 🧡

Tomorrow marks six months since we lost Gordie. A whole half of a year. It’s a strange milestone, because grief doesn’t have a timeline, and it looks entirely different for everyone. For me, it has meant learning how to live dual realities.
To the outside world, life keeps moving. I put on a smile, I show up, and I go through the motions of the day. But the truth is, behind that smile is a horrible, lingering heartache that hasn’t faded one bit.
There isn’t a day that goes by where Gordie isn’t on my mind. Some days I can look at his photos and smile, incredibly grateful for the bond we shared. But most days, the reality of his absence takes over, and I still just cry.
We all carry loss in our own way and at our own pace. For me, half a year without my sweet boy has just proven that the love doesn’t change, and neither does the missing.
I know so many of you here have loved and lost a pet, or will have to navigate this grief down the road. If you are hurting, please know that it is entirely okay to grieve differently than others. There is no right way, no perfect timeline, and no expiration date on missing a companion who held your whole heart.

Nine years ago today, Lylle came into our lives. She was 4 years old the day she arrived, and just like every foster before her, our intention was to give her a safe home, show her what love felt like, and learn who she was so we could guide her to the perfect forever home.

Little did we know, the matchmaking was already done.

The second she walked in, Gordie made it undeniably clear that she was meant to be his best friend. We are still so thankful he picked her for us. She became the absolute best unplanned addition to our family, and nine years later, she is the ultimate reminder of his perfect judgment.

Losing Gordie left such a massive void in our home, and we miss him every single day—but having Lylle here by our side is like keeping a piece of his heart with us. Happy 9-year adoptiversary, Lylle. 🧡 Thank you for being the beautiful legacy he left behind.

Go, Lylle, it’s your birthday 🎉
13 years of pure sweetness, a side of spice, and a smile so contagious you can’t help but grin right back.

How nice it is to have someone that wants nothing more than your company. 🧡

While the rest of the world is busy chasing the next thing, Lylle is just chasing the simple joy of being right here. Looking at her in this photo, it hits me how effortless it is to love a dog like this. She was here long before we lost Gordie, but navigating that heavy ache has made me lean on her steady presence in a whole new way. She really is the dog I never knew I needed.

We live in a world that is always demanding more—more hustle, more perfection, more keeping up. But Lylle completely rejects all of that noise. She has zero interest in expectations or comparison; she just moves through the world with an open heart. Every new path is an adventure, everyone is a friend, and her tail never stops moving. She doesn’t demand grand gestures or constant attention; her only real requirement is just to be woven into our day, standing exactly where we stand.

It made me smile looking back at this photo. While anyone else would be staring out at that incredible sunrise over the lake, her eyes were locked right on me. It’s the sweetest reminder of what she values most—she doesn’t care about the big, picture-perfect moments, she just chooses to focus entirely on simply being together.

Sometimes the best chapters of your life are the ones you didn’t plan for at all 🧡

When I posted about fostering yesterday, I had no idea today was National Rescue Dog Day—but looking at this picture of Lylle smiling, the timing feels pretty perfect.

Next month marks 9 years since we adopted her! For those who don’t know, Lylle actually started as a foster. Adoption wasn’t even on our radar; we were a year into a two-year waitlist for a male GSP puppy.

Within 24 hours, everything changed. We officially adopted Lylle, emailed our breeder to withdraw from the waitlist, and walked away from our deposit. In just one day, it was crystal clear that Gordie had met the dog he wanted to do life with. That first night he slept on the floor next to Lylle to comfort her. It was the first night in his almost five years of life he CHOSE to not sleep next to us. For those that knew Gordie, that was like the unimaginable.

She was perfect for him and perfect for us. We thank our lucky stars every day that we had the opportunity to meet her via fostering 🧡

Years ago, I shared this photo, and looking at it today, the message hits just as hard.
On the left is Lylle on her very first day in rescue. On the right is the happy, vibrant dog she was always meant to be. Change and being uprooted from the only comforts they’ve ever known is terrifying for any dog. Lylle was surrendered at four years old for simply being “too much” for a family that didn’t have the time or patience to figure her out.
High-energy breeds require deep research and an even deeper commitment.
But when life happens and dogs do find themselves starting over, fosters are the ultimate heroes. There is a huge misconception that you have to choose a side between supporting ethical breeding and advocating for rescue. The truth is, they can coexist, and both serve a vital purpose. There are so many incredible, preservation breeders out there doing things the right way—our late, sweet Gordie was a testament to that. We also know that adoption isn’t the seamless choice for everyone due to specific breed needs.
You don’t have to have a house full of rescue dogs to make a massive, tangible difference in the rescue world. Even if your current dog came from a reputable breeder, your home can still be the life-saving bridge a rescue dog needs. Fostering isn’t just about giving a dog a temporary roof; it’s about rebuilding their confidence from scratch. It’s showing a confused, heartbroken pup that their “quirks” are actually their best qualities, and preparing them for the forever family they always deserved.
If your heart and home are open to making a difference, I highly encourage you to search locally and see which rescues service your specific region. They are always in need of safe harbors.
Lylle is living proof of what happens when a dog is given a second chance. If you have the space, look into fostering. You might just “fail” beautifully like we did. 🐾
